Don't get it twisted - A Powerful Book

First off, for anyone who finds this book dry or boring, understand one thing: this is not pop fiction. You're not going to get neat drawn-out analogies that compares human struggle to a football game or any such nonsense. It's a very intelligent, articulate book that doesn't try to dumb down its message for the uninitiated. But it's also not rocket science. Read it with an open mind and any knowledge you may have of the 60's and 70's and you'll do just fine.
What is often misunderstood is that Ms. Davis did not like the idea of a 'personal' autobiography and was very reluctant to do the book in the first place. She didn't see herself as so special or disconnected in any way from the lives of the millions of struggling people that she and her struggle sought to better. So, she wrote a 'political' autobiography. Every facet of her own life that she chose to share with us is tied in some way to that struggle to bring dignity to the masses of human beings exploited throughout the world. What you walk away with after reading this book is how much she really does care the lives of people. It's not just a bunch of abstract ideas, neat theories, or some trivial intellectual excercise. It really is life and death issues. And she fought for the lives of many as if she would fight for her own.
I think the most important thing you walk away with, and what she wants you to walk away with, is a clear and powerful demonstration of just how much people can bring about real change when we work together collectively in mass and fight for what we believe is right. Time and time again, victory after victory, against what some would consider insurmountable odds, the will of the people were heard. Not because they elected some noble politician who changed it from within. And not because of the kindness of those in power. But because thousands of everyday people like you and me took to the streets and DEMANDED that obvious wrongs be made right. Anyone who takes for granted the 5-day work week, child labor laws, civil rights, humane working conditions, fair and equal compensation, should not take lightly the efforts of people throughout history like Ms. Angela Davis. We benefit from all those things because people got in the street, fought and died for those things. Check your history.
The bottom line is if you are looking for 'light' entertainment reading, you might not find it in this book. But, if you are politicially minded or even curious about the social environment of the 60's, this is a must read. If you care about the plight of black people and opressed people everywhere, get this book. If all you've ever known about revolution, black power struggle, and those damn communists is what you've read about in school or in the papers and you KNOW they're not telling the full story, get this book. Finally, if you know how messed up things are in this country but don't know what to do about it, your life will be changed by this book.

This Is Our History

The political autobiography was published in 1974 by Random House and reissued in 1988 and 2004.

The book is built around Davis evading police, but finally being captured in New York City and being charged with three capital offenses due to her alleged participation in an escape attempt at the Marin County Hall of Justice.

Davis then weaves her story through her 16 months in jail while awaiting trial, a world-wide campaign calling for her release and her acquittal of all charges in 1972.

It is a treasure of information from one of the most high-profile members of the revolutionary movement in the 1960s and 1970s. Davis was shaped by her travels to Cuba and concluded democracy and socialism are more compatible for freedom of the working class than democracy and capitalism.

The book does not include new material. I would be very interested in an additional chapter on when Davis and others broke from the Communist Party USA during a tumultuous meeting in Cleveland, OH, in the early 1990s.

Only the most rabid revisionist of 1960s-1970s political turmoil would not give her the place she rightfully deserves when discussing that era.

The book remains an unrepentant statement against government-backed repression, and the work by one person to bring these issues to the forefront of the consciousness of all people.

On the FBI's most wanted list at only 26yrs old. A life so eventful she could write an utterly suspenseful autobiography at 28yrs old.

When I started reading this autobiography I had to stop a moment and think about the ages Davis was when all these events were taking place. This autobiography was sobering to say the least. Currently at ages 23-26, most women have extremely superficial or vanity laden thoughts. At the same age Angela Davis was making history. She was one of the leaders and very few women of a national movement to liberate Black and Brown people alike.

"...love has been ordained by God. White people's hatred of us was neither natural nor eternal."

In Birmingham, AL, Davis grew up in the middle of the civil Rights Movement and constant bombings in her neighborhood. When Davis speaks about her parents and siblings, especially her mother, there is a certain tenderness and love that leaps off the page. Despite all she faced she stated she wanted it all to be over more so for her mom than herself. Her sister Fania was relentless in her devotion. There were numerous loyal friends from various political factions. Throughout this book you get the feel that Angela Davis was born for the fight she was in. She had a certain resilience and calm that most people, man or woman, would break into pieces under. She was totally devoted to the revolution. During her stay in the NY House of Detention, Davis really began to develop where her life work would be. There is where she saw addicts as young as fourteen, deplorable living conditions, and guards who she described as prisoners themselves. Davis spent a lot of her time in jail observing the system instead of allowing it to defeat her. She was determined to help her fellow sisters and brothers that were living in subhuman conditions and being denied even some of the most basic necessities. While in prison, she seemed detached from her own plight thinking on how she could assist or gain assistance for others.

"I decided then and there that if I was ever free, I would use my life to uphold the cause of my sisters and brothers behind walls."

Davis stated that she hated being the center of excessive attention and never aspired to be a "public revolutionary." She had to get use to it quick. Right now in 2012 she is still larger than life. The most moving sections of this autobiography for me was the times Davis spent in prison and her love for George Jackson. In prison she described the horrors of and shed a blinding light on the injustices within the penal system. The isolation that was imposed on her was designed to destroy her. It is was simply mind blowing. The only time Davis gave a glimpse into her personal life was when it came to George Jackson. She still remained very discreet. You get the feel that Davis is very guarded in this area which is understandable. The love between them was so strong when she when did describe it she could not have left it out of her story if she wanted to. When Davis received the news that George was killed in San Quentin it was heartbreaking. She decribed it as "the loss of an irretrievable love." This was a man she only saw in chains. Their love blossomed out of words and a love for the people. This devastating loss seemed to have pushed her on to victory.

5 stars for the first two stories ony

I bought this book because I love Laura Florand's books. Her story is the second one in the anthology. The first story is by Mary Carter. As far as I can tell, Mary Carter is a very new author. I liked the story she wrote. It's a bit fanciful, but then again, this is a Christmas romance anthology. The story is a 1 on a scale of 1 to 10 for heat. I'm curious if Mary Carter's other stories follow a similar trend. So, having finished that chaste but sweet story, I started on Laura Florand's entry.

If Mary Carter's story about a carousel was a 1 on the heat scale, Laura Florand's was a 10. It was surprising to me that the publisher/editor/someone? thought putting these stories back-to-back was a good idea. I didn't have a problem with it, but I could see some readers being surprised. It won't be surprising to anyone that reads my review history that I loved what Laura Florand wrote. I encourage any new readers that haven't read her work before to give this one a try. It is the first in a new series. She is known for her Chocolate series. The characters in this story know some of the characters from the Chocolate series, but this is paving the way for the Rose series. I liked it a lot. I loved the return to Provence, albeit in winter. Laura Florand also sets up what appears to be a plot arc (is that what it's called?) for the series with the meddling older relatives. I can't wait to see what's next!

As for the Linda Lael Miller and Kat Martin installments, I did not realize they were reprints. The Linda Lael Miller was ok, but it was familiar. I've probably read it before. The Kat Martin story was familiar too, so again, probably read it before. I cared for it the least...and I've been a Kat Martin fan for a long time. It was probably that her story was historical (post US Civil War time period) and didn't fit with the three contemporary stories. I read historical and contemporary romances equally as much, but I don't think they belong in an anthology together.

Having said all this, I will parrot the other reviewers. Buy this for Florand (and Carter). Now pardon me while I go look up Mary Carter's other amazon offerings since I already have all of Florand's.

Others have made up their minds and Georgia has to sell and learns Adam is one she has to deal with. He soon explains how he knows her and he helps her open the big box from decades ago. Love learning of the RI facts as I am a native myself.
Love the connection and the charity to others of the carousel horse in this book.

Frank Raynor along with his 7 year old daughter Lizzie rent to Addie Hutton who is now in charge of Henry. Lizzie meets them all and opens an advent box-one gift a day til Christmas morning.
The house used to belong to Addie's parents, now she's in the servants quarters.
His wife had died and left Lizzie pretending to be an angel, especially now for the school play. Henry is Addie's ex husbands step son so while he's on his new honeymoon the child was sent to him. She does find a job in town and they all draw closer with each of the gifts that are opened together every morning.
Miracles, that's what they all need..

1860's and the train has derailed spilling all the goods in the woods. Angela Summers heads that way trailing Josh Coltrian, now a doctor who had kissed her one winter years ago.
Josh tried not to think of Angel but a woman he met in PA but it wasn't working... Angela can't get past the fact that he fought for the enemy.
Loved hearing about her charity work and how she involves everybody to help...

Buy it for Florand and Miller

As a follower of Laura Florand's La Vie en Roses series, I was looking forward to this short story and discovering some authors in this anthology. Outside of the loose theme of trying to find a place that feels like home, these 4 stories could not be more divergent. I like anthologies because you get little gifts of sweet fun, however sometimes authors rush the details and leaves the reader trying to fill the gaps...which was true for all the stories.

1. Christmas Carousel by Mary Carter
Georgia has fond memories of riding a carousel with her father around Christmas. One year, she meets a dying girl named Cindy. Fast forward: Georgia's a widow with a son, runs an auction house in a sleepy old downtown which developers are trying to buy and make into a mall, then she receives a carousel horse from her deceased father for Christmas in front of one of the developers, who is Cindy's brother, Ben. Did you follow all that? Ben and Georgia decide to track down who actually sent the horse and get stuck in some back water area in Rhode Island during a snow storm. There was so much going on in this story, I couldn't feel any connection between Ben and Georgia outside of guilty gratitude that does not equate passion. 2 out of 5 stars.

2. A Rose in Winter by Laura Florand
Allegra is in the south of France for Christmas while she is researching for her PHD. Raoul is head of the African division of his Rosier family business but wants to come home. They have a one night stand, which leads them to a misunderstanding in the morning. As they confront each other, they both learn of each other's desire to feel at ease with themselves and their families. The beginning of this story was a bit stilted, but getting past all that, you see the heart of both Allegra and Raoul, along with some feisty Rosier family members who, hopefully with have books of their own. Steamiest of the 4 stories. 4 out of 5 stars.

3. 24 Days of Christmas by Linda Lael Miller originally published in 2004
Addie's world crashed down around her after an article she wrote had her fired and running away from LA to her home town on CO. Calling on her former fiancé, Frank, who is now the town Chief of Police and widow, she is trying to start over. Then her ex husband dumps her step son on her while he is away on his honeymoon. This story was the BEST of the 4 and really delved into what "home" means and if it can be found in a place or a person. Each of the characters were sweet and flawed. It made you want I make your own advent calendar to follow along. 5 stars!

4. Christmas Angel by Kat Martin originally published in 1997! Set is post Civil War Savannah. Angel never forgave her love, Josh for leaving her to fight for the North. Now he is back in his "blue belly Yank" uniform as a Dr. running the local, dilapidated hospital filled with wounded soldiers. I stopped reading this and couldn't finish. Southern Civil War settings are not my thing, but even so, I just couldn't get into the characters. I didn't care that she lost her plantation, or how they still felt tingly around each other. I am not sure how the publishers chose this story, but it was a DNF for me. 0 stars.

Overall, I would have bought this book for Laura Florand, but was lucky enough to receive an Advanced Reading Copy. I was pleasantly surprised by Ms. Miller's story, but the other 2 were a waste of time.

About the Author

Thomas Reddy, Ph.D., a pioneer in the lithium battery field, is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School of the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey. He previously served as Vice President of Power Conversion Inc., (currently Hawker Electracell, Inc.) and Yardney Technical Products, Inc. Mandatory Reference Book on Battery Technology

Linden's Handbook of Batteries, 4th Edition

When I was President of Duracell's New Products and Technology Division, David Linden was working for us at the same time as a consultant. At that time David was working on his second edition. Now I have acquired all 4 editions and can say there are no other reference books on battery and fuel cell technology that are nearly as comprehensive as these books. I have just started using the 4th edition and it contains much needed technology updates on old as well as new battery chemistries. This is absolutely critical because of the substantial R&D investment in battery technologies which has occurred in the last 15 years due to the rapid growth of portable electronics, handheld phones, notebook computers, and, recently, electric vehicles of many types. Tom Reddy has done an outstanding job, carrying on the work of David Linden by collecting and editing all the newest battery technology information. For anyone serious in understanding the complexities of electrochemistry this 4th Edition is a must have.

Review of 4th Ed. of Linden's Handbook of Batteries

This is a most useful and comprehensive reference for almost any conceivable battery type and application. From the applications engineer wishing to design an appropriate power source to the scientist engaged in fundamental research on battery materials for the next generation, there is something here for everyone. I run a physics/materials science lab at a university and therefore consider myself in the latter category. The Handbook is required reading for all of my students. I basically agree with the more positive reviews of the 3rd addition on this website, including the negative aspect of these otherwise complimentary accounts, in that the 2001 edition is badly out of date for the 2010 engineer or scientist. This critical need has been met by the 4th edition and I will comment briefly on the updated material. There are several entirely new chapters and many of the original chapters have also been updated (in some cases, significantly). This new material could not come at a more opportune time. The pressure of climate change calls out for new batteries and battery systems to power electric cars and provide stabilization of the electricity grid which will rely more and more on renewable but intermittent generation from wind and solar. Another notable addition is a new chapter on batteries for biomedical applications, which describe applications ranging from saving lives (e.g. cardiac defibrillators) to improving the quality of life (e.g. drug delivery pumps). Also notable is a new Appendix on failure analysis, which goes beyond the basic chemistry and operation principles and provides very useful guidance for troubleshooting systems in the field. All chapters are written by the leading experts in their fields

Worth the price of admission.

The book is well written and full of detail that brings the amazing complexity of these devices into scrutiny. The breadth of chemistry types are well covered. The application I am researching was covered but not in as much detail as I would have liked. This is partial due to the fact that the application is for long duration very low discharge devices and this use is not wide spread. The fact that this was covered at all was worth the price of the book. Technical, yes for the engineer you know and love.

Best Book On PCOS...losing weight and feeling better!

I have read a lot of books on PCOS and hormones since I have been diagnosed about 10 years ago (I am now 31) Dr. Fiona's book is by far the best book on PCOS I have ever read. She breaks it all down what your endocrine is doing and why you are having the symptoms. She then goes step by step with supplements and diet on how you can help your body reverse your PCOS. One of the top things I loved about this book she is didn't just name off a supplement but gave a description of what it does for PCOS and how much of that supplement you should be taking to see an effective change. I had taken some of those supplements she recommends but when I saw what she recommended in dosing I was so off. I was taking far to little to see healing in my body. The diet part of the book was super eye opening as well. I have been gluten free for awhile now, and minimize my sugar intake, and low carb as much as I can, but I am still eating some higher carb things (like rice). Dr. Fiona introduces how we should eat to according how foods spike our insulin not only focus on blood sugar.

Anyways, lets get to the nitty gritty. I have done the diet to best of my ability for over a month now (only cheated like 3 times on, cheese at a resturant). I added an arrange of supplements about 3 weeks ago as well. I am happy to inform that I feel a lot better! My acne is about 75% improved, I've lost 8 pounds, and started my period yesterday. I don't deal with facial or body hair, but I have excessive hair loss on my head. I know to see a visiable improvement on hair growth will at least take 6 months. This has been a huge blessing to me. I can't wait to see how my body changed over the next 3-6 months.

The best book on PCOS I have ever read. I've had pcos since I was 14 and spend a lot of time researching how I can make it better. For once, the author knows more about pcos than I do! I learned so much, and I am very grateful.

Anarchism for Idiots

Imagine Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris set in the Lower East side of New York City at the end of the nineteenth century, and you will have a good sense of the emotional and intellectual depth of Vivian Gornick's Emma Goldman: Revolution as a Way of Life. Like the narrative of Midnight in Paris, which is structured around a series of encounters with the great writers of the "lost generation," Gornick's biography is propelled forward by a wave of almost interchangeable cardboard radicals--from Johann Most and Alexander Berkman, to Mikhail Bakunin, Peter Kropotkin and Big Bill Haywood--who appear as little more than caricatures of themselves, and then disappear again into the shadows cast by the often wildly contradictory rendering of Goldman that occupies the center of the book. The major difference between the two works, however, is that while Allen's film is a light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek comedy of Bohemian Paris, Gornick's shallow, pop-culture rendering of the heroes of nineteenth century American radicalism is seemingly accomplished without any irony. For example, about Johann Most, the editor of the radical Freiheit newspaper, we learn that "for him, it was in-your-face rebellion all the way." And of Alexander Berkman, Gornick declares that "he was a man in whom emotional understanding had penetrated flesh and bone and reached the heart." One might expect this kind of boilerplate effusion on a radical walking tour of the Village, but in a Yale University Press biography such empty phrases are, to say the least, embarrassing, suggesting an editor either too lazy or too timid to strike out such nonsense.

Legacy of Red Emma.

Emma Goldman: Revolution as a Way of Life by Vivian Gornick, though only 142 pages, turns out to be an interesting and educating book. The tumultuous life and turbulent times of Red Emma, as she was nicknamed by the press, are skillfully shaped by the biographer into an engaging narrative. Possessing good command of history, Vivian Gornick explains Emma Goldman's ideological make-up. With eloquent brevity she presents the tenets of Anarchism and sketches the political profiles of its founding fathers- Proudhon, Bakunin and Kropotkin. Nor does she skip Chernyshevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov or Maxim Gorky - the luminaries of Russian literature, who filled the minds of Emma Goldman's generation with a mélange of romantic ideas from self-improvement and free love to struggle against the czarist regime. A feminist leader in her own right, Vivian Gornick did not hesitate to criticize Goldman's unorthodox views on marriage and free love.

Emma Goldman was born a rebel. Possessed from childhood by a dibbuk of defiance, she was seeking fulfillment in any struggle - be it against capitalist exploitation of workers, oppression by state bureaucracy, military conscription, or inequality of women. She helped her comrade-in-arms Sasha Berkman to organize the revenge assassination of H.C. Frick in 1892. Frick survived, Berkamn was imprisoned for 14 years, but Goldman got off for the lack of evidence. The anarchist assassin of President McKinley, L. Czolgosz, was inspired by the fiery rhetoric of Goldman's and Berkman's speeches. After organizing a campaign against military conscription in 1917 the couple was imprisoned for two years. Upon release from prison, in December 1919, they were deported to Soviet Russia.
That deportation turned to be a blessing in disguise. Horrified by the coercive nature and genocidal politics of the Soviet regime, Goldman and Berkman became among the few revolutionaries who not only understood the evil nature of Bolshevism, but had the courage to tell the truth about it to the rest of the world. The book My Disillusionment in Russia published in 1924 is a powerful document which, at least to some degree, vindicated Red Emma's legacy as an anarchist agitator and preacher of free love. Unfortunately, Vivian Gornick, following the earlier biographers, criticizes Goldman's "...negative...depiction of what was still revolution in trouble" failing to realize that it was the Russian people who were in trouble. The mass executions in Petrograd were already a routine by October 1918.

It is logical to assume that to qualify for inclusion in the Jewish Lives series, the biographer should have examined the effect the `revolutionary life' of Emma Goldman had on the Jewish People. Sadly, that part, arguably the most tragic part of Goldman's legacy, is missing.
Having enough of the anti-American activities of red goldmans and berkamns, the US authorities introduced the Immigration Act of 1924, which reflected the discriminatory sentiments surfaced in the public during the Red Scare of 1919-1920. This Act, reversing the policy of unlimited immigration from Eastern Europe, resulted in de-facto cessation of Jewish immigration. Hundreds of thousands of Jews, who were later trapped in Nazi dominated Europe and eventually perished in Holocaust, could have been saved had the gates of the USA remain open.

Shockingly thin

Like the other reviewer calling this book silly, I couldn't believe my eyes as I skimmed thru this book as fast as possible looking for the meat. Shocking for an important figure and shocking as the work of a good writer I've read before. And why the silly, hip language? Felt like I was reading a dumbed-down book for young adolescents.

we enjoyed each of these books in this series and this one was just as good as the others. They give you a bit of information that you can expand upon and talk about if you choose to do so with your child.
