A great bargain for priceless ideas

Creativity and Problem Solving

We are all geniuses according to Brian Tracy, with the proper training we can all come up with new and exciting ideas to improve our companies and our lives. In his new small but very powerful and thought provoking book Tracy shows how we can put our minds to work thinking and coming up with new ideas.
In one chapter he writes about the seven sources of innovation and how these sources promote creative thinking: Here are a few examples to whet your appetite:
The Unexpected Event: When something happens a problem or an opportunity that makes us think that much harder, focusing on this new issue to overcome the challenge or take advantage of the opportunity. He demonstrates this by showing us how Peter Omidyar wanting to sell his large Pez candy dispenser collection realized that there was not good auction site he could go to son he created E-Bay.
Process Need: When you need to improve process or technology to overcome an industry challenge, like when Tom Monaghan wanted to know why pizzas could not be delivered in less than thirty minutes and found a unique process change to make it happen.
Demographic Changes: Think of all the news products that are being developed as the baby boomers enter retirement age. This is a perfect example of demographic changes.
Tracy encourages us via 21 short but pertinent chapters to use our minds to solve our problems.
What I like about this book is that you cannot but spend four or five minutes reading it and your mind starts to whir with new insights and ideas. The book is just crammed full of what I would call mind triggers designed to make you think and create. He spends time talking about “Mindstorming Method” how they should be run, how many people should participate and how long is long enough for these to be effective.
There are other chapters on

This is one of the volumes in the Brian Tracy Success Library, all published by AMACOM. Tracy has already written one or more books of greater length and depth that examine these and other major business subjects. What he has now done with each of the volumes in the series is to condense with consummate skill the most valuable information, insights, and counsel within a 100-page format, in this instance the most valuable lessons he has learned about creative or innovative problem solving.

Briefly but substantially, Tracy covers essentials of that include The Root Sources of Creativity, Three Triggers to Creativity, Mind-Stimulating Exercises, Practice Lateral Thinking, Practice Zero-Based Thinking, The Value-Engineering Principle. He again em ploys a format that frames 21 key elements that can be involved in a process to produce creative or innovative solutions to especially serious problems or answers to especially challenging questions. Sometimes an entirely new solution or answer is needed. Other times, the best solution or answer may well be a refinement or development of a solution or answer that is no longer sufficient. More often than not, such a problem or question resembles a puzzle whose solution or answer can be revealed only by obtaining the right pieces and then assembling them in proper order.

Readers will appreciate Tracy's provision of an "Action Exercises" section at the conclusion of each chapter. I strongly recommend that a lined notebook be kept near at hand in which to record comments, questions, and page references as well as completion of the exercises. It also makes sense to highlight key passages in the book. Doing all this will facilitate, indeed expedite frequent review of material later.

Here in Dallas near the downtown area, we have a Farmer's Market area at which merchants offer slices of fresh fruit as samples of their wares. In that spirit, I now provide Peter Drucker's list of "The Seven Sources of Innovation" that racy discusses ion Chapter Eighteen:

1. The Unexpected Event "is often the breakthrough innovation that changes an entire industry."

2. Incongruity "is the reality of what is and what 'out' to be."

3. Process Need that, when developed or improved, "would allow you to serve your customers better, faster, cheaper, or more conveniently than your competitors."

4. Changes in industry structure such as "the introduction of the Apple iPhone in 2006 which purred Samsung into the market with its Android-based smartphones."

5. Demographic Changes such as "the population movement from high-tax, high-regulation states to low-tax, low-regulation states" such as Texas with no personal income tax and a business-favorable regulatory system.

6. Changes in Values and Perceptions such "a much greater emphasis on health foods and fitness today than there was in the last generation."

7. New Knowledge, "both scientific and nonscientific, creates new economic trends, opportunities, and even completely new industries."

I agree with Tracy that almost anyone can develop the skills to make decisions that are much more creative or innovation. In their classic book, Creative Confidence: Unleashing the Creative Potential Within Us All, Tom Kelley and David Kelley observe: "As brothers who have worked together for thirty years at the forefront of innovation, we have come to see [various] misconceptions as 'the creativity myth.' It is a myth that far too many people share. This book is about the opposite of that myth. It is about what we call 'creative confidence.' And at its foundation is the belief that we are [begin italics] all [end italics] creative...Creative confidence is a way of seeing that potential and your place in the world more clearly, unclouded by anxiety and doubt. We hope you'll join us on our quest to embrace creative confidence in our lives. Together, we can all make the world a better place."

This book is Brian Tracy's substantial contribution to an operational manual that explains HOW. Also, as is true of each of the other volumes in The Brian Tracy Success Library, the price at which Amazon now sells this volume ($9.95) is not a bargain; it's a steal.

Fiber optic technology is destined to form the backbone of the 21st Century's Information Age. During the past 10 years it has also become apparent that fiber optic technology is very well suited to structural monitoring and is capable of tasks not practical or economically viable with conventional technology. Structural Monitoring with Fiber Optic Technology provides an introduction to the relevant background material needed to understand and appreciate the technology that underpins this new form of structural monitoring. The book richly illustrates the subject matter with 615 figures and provides many examples of fiber optic structural sensing, including a detailed overview of a number of major field site applications. A conscious effort has been made to focus on those aspects of the technology that show the greatest promise in terms of future development and broad implementation. Although the civil engineering community has been the first to really embrace fiber optic structural monitoring, as seen in the abundant examples of applications, the technology is equally applicable to other industrial sectors, such as the aerospace and marine industry.
A number of innovative bridges have been built recently to demonstrate that fiber reinforced polymer composite materials can be used to replace steel in many of its functions. This includes stay-cables, prestressing tendons and shear reinforcements. Fiber reinforced polymer rehabilitation and strengthening wraps and patches are equally showing great promise. In both instances the use of fiber optic structural sensing systems has been shown to be well suited for monitoring the sue of these new materials. The combination of these two new technologies represents a major advance that is expected to revolutionize the construction industry. In one example a state-of-the-art fiber optic monitoring system permits engineers at a distant monitoring site to closely observe the response of this innovative bridge to traffic loads and track the long term performance of its new materials. Fiber optic structural sensing technology is equally applicable to other industrial sectors, such as the aerospace and marine industries. Indeed, several examples of ships instrumented with arrays of fiber optic structural sensors are also included.

About the Author
Dr. Raymond M. Measures was a Professor at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies from 1964 to 1998, and served as the Associate Director from 1984 to 1991. In 1987, he was a member of the team that established the Ontario Laser and Lightwave Research Centre and in the early years, served on both its Board of Directors and its Management Committee. Dr. Measures played a key role in the creation of the Intelligent Sensing for Innovative Structures Network Centres of Excellence in 1995 and served as its Vice President for its firs two years. In the past decade, Dr. Measures has pioneered fiber optic structural sensing in Canada and established Fiber Optic Smart Structures Laboratory at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies in 1988. The success of this project led to the formation of a new and vibrant company, ElectroPhotonics Corporation, which now produces state-of-the-art fiber optic telecommunication and structural sensing systems into innovative new bridges. Dr. Measures has authored or edited four books, contributed chapters to six books, an author or co-author on over 190 papers, and is a co-inventor on five patents.

About the Author
Ken Fleming has been an enthusiastic and passionate Bible teacher for more than fifty years. His service for Christ has led him to many parts of the globe, including South Africa, where he spent twenty-five years as a missionary among the Zulu people. From 1977 through 2002, Ken taught in the Bible and Missions programs at Emmaus Bible College in Dubuque, Iowa. Today he continues proclaiming the gospel and strengthening the church body through writing and preaching ministries.

A Different Viewpoint

As a former student of Ken Fleming's, I was required to read this book in one of his classes. I had read "Through the Gates of Splendor" by Elizabeth Elliot, and so figured that it would not be of much interest to me. However, when I did read it, I was fascinated by the different viewpoint that Mr. Fleming takes.

Ken writes from the perspective of a brother who had a close relationship with Pete, even though (at the time of Pete's martyrdom) they were on complete opposite sides of the Earth (Ken was working with the Zulu at the time). He discusses Pete's personality, his working relationship with God and others and his reasonings about giving up a potential career to be a missionary who would have no visible means of support (he did not even have pledges, nor did he request money from others.) He makes great use of Pete's diary and letters to others to develop his memoir.

As a professor, Mr. Fleming has a sharp wit and a strong ability to use language to communicate; this ability comes out in his book. A good read!

A Victorious Trophy of God's Grace!

Page after page of these entries in Peter Fleming's journal give a deep insight into what a man after God's own heart looks like. The process of Pete's spiritual maturity seen in the variety of experiences that each day would bring served to nurture a reflection of God's love through him that was extended toward those whom he would win for Christ. All of these episodes are trophies of God's grace and standards of true discipleship that raise the bar of faith far above the status quo of mere Christian duty. It was the beauty of Christ that drove and sustained him, with a persistence that flowed from the fountainhead of worship. In all of this, the reader is led to see a quality of living that is not out of reach for any heart that is surrendered to the Lord Jesus Christ, constrained by His love and held by His hand to fulfill the purpose of His calling in each of us. Thank you, Ken Fleming, for these tender, transparent lessons afforded by your loving display of your brother Pete's faith in practice. To God alone be the glory!

Excellent Book!!!

I was so happily surprised by how good this book was as I went through the projects. It is concise, thorough and never boring.
My only nit picky complaint is with the publisher: they used very poor quality paper on this. Why they did that, I can't imagine
as it is the best I've read on enhancing one's CAD programs. And it is up to speed with the latest CS5.

basic understanding

I like this book. Like many, I taught myself how to use autocad, revit and photoshop for school and work. Therefore I maybe proficient in doing certain things, I lack in using these programs in other ways. So I got this book, in order to improve my rendering skills in photoshop and to gain another perspective on this subject.

Unlike the other comments, I would not say this book is only for beginners only. Although I wish there was more advance tutorials and maybe more explanation...or help in using LISP program for exporting png layering files.

Clear and concise guide

I really didn't know much about hypnosis / self-hypnosis before reading this guide. I had been talking to some friends about the level of stress I had been feeling lately and someone brought up self-hypnosis as a way of dealing with it.

I didn't even know that hypnosis could be used to treat such things. Anyway I ended up searching for a guide that would help teach me what I would need to know to do this effectively. It took some searching but, I found this guide and was really happy with it. Everything is laid out logically and there is a lot of actionable advice that I've been able to put to use.

The guide contains a lot of other sections not relating to stress that may be useful in other situations.

Hypnosis is a double-edged sword.

This book about hypnosis provided interesting facts about the topic, background complete with a timeline; its different types and benefits; self-hypnosis and more related topics. The author’s voice shifts from academic boring to self help and very inconsistent so she failed to connect to me as a reader. I loved the book cover, it looks interesting so I was drawn to read it. I also liked that the author provided the origins of hypnotism. For entertainment purposes, it was fine. But for educational purposes, I’d appreciate citations for the studies mentioned to give it a more accurate take than mere conjectures. As a guide for beginners, it’s a good introductory book to hypnosis. Mastery of the techniques for hypnosis, mind control, manipulation, and more by just reading this book is debatable. The background history became a little close to boring because it’s too long. The chapter about the risks of hypnosis should have been in the earlier part of the book and the conclusion is more like a part of the disclaimer.
A word of caution: self-hypnosis is okay to alleviate one’s stress to manageable levels. To start hypnotizing another person without proper training is another thing. You might open a can of worms you are not ready to deal with which can lead to more trauma to the person involved. I recommend it to people just wanting to read about hypnosis. But do not be deceived by the title, you will not be a master after reading it. It may lead you to more questions, so it’s up to you!

I have learnt a lot on Hypnosis, while reading this book. I earlier knew that Hypnosis is one of the tools used by psychologist in treating their patients, but reading this book showed me much more to hypnosis. The main use of hypnosis is in hypnotherapy which is the use of hypnosis for therapeutic purposes. In this process, the state achieved after hypnotism can be used as a way to attain a progressive type of relaxation. It can be used for treating physical, psychological or emotional disorders. Examples are; eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, stammering and tension.
Hypnosis is a process by which a person reaches a state of consciousness that is enhanced in such a way so that your focus will increase while other awareness's are decreased. Hypnotism is actually used as a short form of "neuro-hypnotism". It is defined as a state of nervous sleep that is different from the normal sleep we undergo. One should get this book and learn the benefits of hypnotism while discarding the misconceptions about it.
