"Review of the Literature" chapter really weak

The book is well laid out and easy to follow but the "Review of the Literature" section was not helpful. A large part of evidence-based practice is learning how to search the research databases and analyzing the articles retreived. This is glossed over at best. The search examples within the text were way too basic (Who searches on just the word "coping" ?) This section is in desperate need of a research librarian's input.

If you must study research, this is a good tool to use

Nursing research is a rather dry topic, and therefore difficult to study unless you're really interested. This book (and the accompanying CD-ROM)make understanding all the jargon and concepts more palatable and user-friendly.

Still not a perfect solution for this!

I got this while I am waiting on Joi Mahon's book to come out in October. It is OK I guess. It uses the fit method where you pin the pattern pieces together on your body which is pretty much impossible to do without a fit buddy. It was a pretty interesting read, it is just that I don't have a soul that could help me pin a pattern on me like is in this book. Still waiting on a real solution for fitting before sewing. I took Joi's classes on Craftsy.com and they are absolutely terrific! Actually the closest I have come to a great solution for this, I can't wait for that book to come out!!!

They're Not Wearing Pants!!

I should have noticed that none of the models on the cover of this book were wearing pants. So I guess it's my own fault that I was disappointed to find that pants fitting is no part of this book. In fact, pants only appear in one or two illustrations and are mentioned briefly in one paragraph. It turns out that there is another book by these authors that covers pants.

I bought the book because, even though I've been sewing a long time and have made everything up to and including lined tailored jackets, you can always learn something new. And in fact, I did pick up a few tips and ideas that will be helpful in fitting tops and jackets. The issue with commercial patterns is that they are all over the map as far as fit is concerned. You can't adjust them all the same way and have them come out with the same fit. As I've grown older and, shall we say, lumpier, it's gotten harder to make things work.

I do agree with others that the tissue fitting that is a major part of this book is difficult and not always useful because tissue paper fits differently than fabric. However, looking at the photos of the pin fits on the various models, made me aware of some issues I have and how I can give the ideas in the book a try without actually messing around with pinning the fragile tissue paper on my body.

Speaking of paper, I always have a roll of paper on hand to trace off the patterns. This preserves the original, reduces the probability that I'll cut on the wrong line of the multi-size pattern (since I only trace the right ones!) and allows me to get wild and crazy with making adjustments. If i wanted to pin-fit I could without tearing my original pattern beyond repair. I can always go back to the original pattern pieces and re-trace if my experiments go too astray.

I highly recommend buying a bolt of muslin on sale and making muslins. It doesn't take that long and it will give a better idea of fit than making yourself crazy with the pattern tissue paper.

All in all, I'm not sorry I bought the book (except for the pants thing!) and I'm looking forward to trying a couple of things on the next jacket I make.

Wish I'd found it years ago

Everything I ever needed to know about fitting but ignored when my mom tried to teach me when I was 12. I've been pretty much your once-in-a-while sewer and knew the things I made mostly didn't fit, but didn't have much idea how to identify the problem, much less know what to do about it. In terms I can understand, these ladies addressed every problem I've ever had AND helped me understand WHY I have that fitting problem AND what to do about it. They make perfect sense both in what they say and how they say it. And, like my mom, they teach you how to do the fit in the paper itself, same as my mom. Plus, they offer a lot of handy tip and ways to do routine things. I read it cover to cover and I feel like sewing now could actually become a pleasure instead of a massive exercise in frustration. FINALLY! This book is staying ON the sewing cabinet at all times!!!

Let's Make a Jesse Tree

This book has the history of the Jesse Tree and so much more. The large patterns for the various ornaments were very easy to follow for a mixed age (3-4 5-9) group of sunday school kids. The final result was glorious.

A Top 10 Tradition in the ONeil Household for over 10 Years!

When Donovan and Ian were little, a CCD Director gave me this book. It has been used in our family every Christmas since and the boys are now 20 and 18yrs old.
I adapted it to fit our needs. Rather than making a banner to hang the symbols on, I made the symbols into ornaments and they are hung on the Christmas tree. And over the years that has changed too. We use to place these on the tree with nothing else, in keeping with the Advent season, then on the 24th we would decorate with all the other ornaments and turn on the lights. It really brought home the idea of waiting and preparing. Now we have a seperate tree, smaller, that we have in our prayer corner.

What I have found so amazing is the children's ability to remember the Bible stories just by looking at the symbols. A helpful tool for experienced trekkers ... with a few snags

This is a fantastically comprehensive guide to the trekking areas of
the Patagonian Andes. Intelligently laid out with very
well-researched maps and local information, it also manages to give a
comprehensive overview of what each area has to offer, without being
exhaustive. It gives you just enough information to get you out there
and discovering on your own. The book does have a few weaknesses --
notably, there are flat-out errors in some of the specific route
descriptions or instructions -- that make it far better-suited to
those who feel comfortable fending for themselves in the wild, and who
don't try and use the book as a substitute for human guides. In
short, if you feel comfortable traveling independently in remote
areas, it's not a problem. If that scares you ... perhaps you should
use the book as a primer and then hire a guide or go with a guided
group.
Ratings for the treks are somewhat arbitrary; one trek rated
"easy" was actually quite rough, and the second half of the
route had been closed for over a year (prior to the book's publication
date -- a real boo-boo). Another trek rated "hard" was
actually not as challenging as advertised. However, the details of
the route descriptions are usually spot-on and very helpful. Most
wonderful are the maps, which experienced trekkers actually CAN use in
place of a topo (despite how foolish this sounds) in many cases.
The
photographs are wonderful, and also give an accurate and beautiful
rendering of the region's charms. I'd describe them as "trekking
porn," they're so luscious.
The information on base towns is
good but incomplete, and I would strongly recommend purchasing Wayne
Bernhardson's Lonely Planet guide to Chile as an accompaniment.
In
contrast, the Bradt book on backpacking in Argentina and Chile is
almost worthless compared to Lindemayer's careful descriptions and
research, and LP's superb regional maps.

amazing hikes, erroneous details

This book is a perfect introduction to the wealth of hiking possibilities in patagonia - many of them are still significantly under-used and of equal calibre to the more famous routes. The general information sections are quite good, and give a good feel for what conditions are like both trekking and travelling in general; a good purchase for planning your trip. Where the book falls down is on the actual trekking notes, which are consistently inaccurate, obscenely outdated and sometimes quite misleading (see other reviews). On this front, Cerro Electrico is not safe - however Cerro Electrico Oeste is safely climbable without mountaineering equipment (although crampons are a nice idea) and gives mind-blowing views of the rear of Fitzroy - I think this might be what the author actually had in mind.

The best use of this book is as an introduction/inspiration, then get hold of decent military maps (plentiful in santiago and buenos aires) and local advice (abundant) and go from there. Given that many of the treks require some degree of independence and judgement (especially in snow-bound regions), pretty much any information should be taken with a grain of salt and certainly should be double-checked independantly or at worst against common sense. It is a pity no better alternative exists, but the general information is good and if prepared, leave the fun of route-finding up to yourself.

Impressive guidebook to Patagonia

We used this guidebook for 2+ months of backpacking
in Chile and I would strongly recommend it. The maps
can be used in lieu of topo maps (I would recommend
topos of course, but you can only get them in Santiago
and Buenos Aires) and the descriptions are remarkably
spot on. I've used dozens of backpacking guides (and
biking, climbing, ... guides) and there are invariably
inaccuracies or route descriptions that don't quite seem
to match. However, this book had fewer of such infelicities
than any guidebook I've used. Kudos to Lindemayer.
In addition, the "other treks" sections of the book
proved invaluable. After our first few weeks, we
realized we really wanted to get off the beaten track
and these little 1-3 paragraph route descriptions gave
us all we needed to track down information on beautiful,
rewarding, and untramelled hikes throughout Patagonia.
Lindemayer clearly has an explorer's impulse and a near
encyclopedic knowledge of the area.
Only caveat: if you're just going to Torres del Paine
and/or Los Glaciares you really don't need any guidebook;
the commonly available maps and steady streams of backpackers
on the trail will keep you well informed.
