A two-star book

I bought this at the same time I bought the MTV oral history, which is a much better book. By comparison, "MTV Ruled the World" is a cursory and thin survey of the era.

Pretty Good

"I Want My MTV" that came out around 2012 is better and features a wider array of musicians and insiders, but this book is very good as well. Not sure if we need 2 1/2 page commentaries from Oran "Juice" Jones (!), but it's an enjoyable quick read.

I Want My MTV

In some ways, it's hard to remember just how huge MTV was in the early to mid 80s. Today, you can find virtually any song or video with the click of a computer mouse. But, 30 years ago, it wasn't that easy. I turned 16 in 1981 and, in our town, we didn't get MTV on our cable system until 1982. I had spent most of the mid 70s to 1982 listening to FM radio. I can't even estimate how many days and nights I'd listen to the radio, singing along with the better known tunes and grinning from ear to ear when some deep track was played. In my mind, it seems almost like a magical time. The first time I saw MTV, I was hooked. It was the same feeling that I had with radio, heck, even more so. I remember all the hours watching MTV, it seemed to always be on. I, like a lot of people, would wait and wait for a certain video to be played and keep my eyes glued to the TV during the 3 or 4 minutes that song aired. To this day, when I hear certain songs, I think of the images from the video as the song plays (for example, just heard "Don't Answer Me" by Alan Parsons and all I could think of was the cartoon video of that song).

I have wanted, forever, to read an in-depth book about the early days of MTV. Thankfully, Greg Prato wrote this fantastic book. Every single angle of MTV is covered here. From it's start up, to the VJs, to discussions about the making of and look of countless classic videos, to the genesis of the "I Want My MTV" slogan and on and on. No area is left uncovered. MTV's story is told, in this book, through the eyes of the people that were there and made MTV what it was (Nina Blackwood, Alan Hunter, Fee Waybill from the Tubes, Mike Reno from Loverboy, Joe Elliot from Def Leppard - you name a person and they've probably been interviewed for this book). Prato covers the basic stuff (how the studio was actually set up, how the VJ segments were taped and not live) to the more complex (for example, Prato tackles the age old criticism of MTV [that it was racist in the beginning because it played no videos from groups or singers that weren't white] and looks at it from all angles). No point of view is left out, here, and by the end of the book, you're really amazed at all the info that's been put forward in this book.

I really couldn't put this book down. I devoured chapters each day and always looked forward to reading more. More than anything, though, Prato somehow captured the magic of the early MTV days. I found myself feeling incredibly nostalgic as I read through the book. I found myself heading to the internet to watch so many of the videos discussed in the pages of this book. It's not just a trip down Memory Lane, indeed, it felt like I was reliving the early 80s and the genesis of MTV as I read this book.

I am an avid reader and am not always easy to please. This book, though, was one of the best books that I've read in years. I do not have a single criticism of this book. Buy it, read it and, I assure you, you'll find yourself countless times humming Duran Duran's "Rio," doing Bowie's moves from "Let's Dance" and saying, more than once, "I want my MTV."

Good review with example problems

I teach in a professional masters program, which means many of our students are continuing their educations after a several-year hiatus from classroom-style mathematics. We teach math refreshers at the beginning of the program, but four hours of classroom time doesn't do much beyond helping students diagnose the areas where they need to practice. We wanted to refer the students to a resource that would help them with the extra practice needed to re-develop forgotten skills, preferably before failing problem sets or midterms.

Our faculty committee looked at several algebra review textbooks and decided that Forgotten Algebra (3rd edition) offered the best blend of explanation, coverage, and practice problems. I remember one student started out doing very badly in my economics class, brought the book to me and asked which chapters to review, and within a few weeks was doing dramatically better. While the student deserves the credit there, the book was clearly a useful aid.

The fourth edition appears to improve on the third by offering more worked example problems.

Over the past three years, our program has been quite satisfied using Forgotten Algebra as our recommended refresher text for students who learned this material once but need to be reminded of it. We do wish it paid more attention to graphing.

Super for someone who took Algebra almost 40 years ago!

Excellent aid for this old guy who almost flunked algebra as a freshman in 1960 and passed a remedial algebra college class in 1975 only because it only had weekly tests and no final exam. This book is far and away the most suitable for me and I have tried two others. I want to get up to speed to follow more of the math in the Coursera (dot org) classes I have been taking.

Awesome workbook!

Going back to college to get my degree so it's been over 30 years since I've had any exposure to a math class. Granted, I never had any problems with math before but I knew I was totally unprepared for starting college algebra. This book has helped tremendously in getting me on track. It's very easy to read and comprehend with a good variety of problems to practice on and detailed explanations without going overboard. In other words, it gives you exactly what you need to know without any fluff or nonsense while being easily understood. I highly recommend it.

A good technical review

This book covers the topic very well and in depth. I am not a chemistry major and so some of the more technical parts are not helpful to me but there is good information that allows one to gain a solid understanding of plastic materials characteristics and production methods. And this is why I purchased the book.

About the Author
OLIVER SACKS was born in 1933 in London and was educated at Queen’s College, Oxford. He completed his medical training at San Francisco’s Mount Zion Hospital and at UCLA before moving to New York, where he soon encountered the patients whom he would write about in his book Awakenings.

Dr. Sacks spent almost fifty years working as a neurologist and wrote many books, including The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Musicophilia, and Hallucinations, about the strange neurological predicaments and conditions of his patients. The New York Times referred to him as "the poet laureate of medicine," and over the years he received many awards, including honors from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Science Foundation, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Royal College of Physicians. His memoir, On the Move, was published shortly before his death in August 2015.

Beautiful

I became aware of Oliver Sacks only in the last year or two of his life, through interviews, articles about his essays and autobiography, and his contributions to WNYC's Radiolab. Every time I heard him speak or read his words, I was struck by what a beautiful, gentle man he seemed to be. And when I heard he had been diagnosed with metastatic cancer and was about to die, I was deeply saddened. His story, which I had just come to know, was coming to an end.

This book is a very short read... A collection of some of his final essays. Though I had read some of them before - or heard him tell some of these stories in interviews, reading them again reminds me about what I love about Oliver Sacks' perspective and reminds me about what I'm grateful about in my own life.

Four short, personal, profound essays about the facts of age and dying

A neurologist who gained his greatest renown for his ability to write about his profession in a thoroughly human way, Oliver Sacks passed away in August of 2015. His literary legacy consists of these four short, personal, profound essays written in the last two years of his life as he contemplated the facts of age and dying.

The essays are presented in chronological order, beginning with “Mercury," in which Sacks recounts his love of elements and atomic numbers, allowing him to state “at seventy-nine, I am gold.” He enumerates some of the negative aspects of aging, such as slowing reactions, flagging energies, the tendency to forget names, and the looming fears of “dementia and stroke.” But he can still declare that he’s looking forward to being 80. “My Own Life” was composed after his diagnosis of a recurrence of fatal cancer. Here he cites philosopher David Hume, who wrote, at a similar juncture, “I now reckon upon a speedy dissolution.” He harks back to his attraction to the elements in “My Periodic Table.” He notes that on his desk is a “little lead casket” for his 82nd birthday, wonders if he will live to see bismuth (83), and feels almost sure he will miss the murderously radioactive 84th: polonium.

In “Sabbath,” the last of the four writings, Sacks recalls growing up in a close-knit orthodox Jewish home, and particularly the rituals of Shabbos: “Kiddush accompanied by sweet red wine and honey cakes…” But this idyllic cultural picture was fractured when Sacks admitted to his father that he had sexual feelings for other boys. His mother shrieked at him, making him hate religion. Leaving home, he struggled with addiction to amphetamines, but later found stability and solace in the work that inspired his book AWAKENINGS.

Thus began a “lonely but deeply satisfying, almost monkish existence.” Sacks devoted himself to the case histories of his and other patients, those whose unique maladies, always presented with respect, even reverence, provided material for popular books like THE MAN WHO MISTOOK HIS WIFE FOR A HAT and SEEING VOICES. Much later, Sacks was inspired by a cousin to visit Israel and then celebrate Sabbath with his orthodox relatives --- “a stopped world, a time outside time.”

In the certainty of approaching death, “Sabbath” concludes with the author’s hope that the “seventh day of one’s life” will bring longed-for peace and rest.

I read Gratitude as soon as I received it, and will read it again, over and over. It is especially comforting to someone moving through their later years. Oliver Sacks always had a special place in my heart.....a beautiful, brilliant, tender soul. He'll be missed.

Read This Book Now!

A more accurate title for this book might be "Prudent Financial Management: How to Feel Good About Yourself When You Reach 50." Please read it all the way to the end (a mere 180 pages) before passing judgment on its values or wisdom.
This is the insider advice that a shrewd, experienced, brutally honest, and wealthy grandfather would give to his favorite grandchild upon graduation from college. I wish someone had explained all this to me when I was 22 or 25 or 30.

Now that I am well passed 50, I recommend this book to you in the hope it will contribute to the happiness of your life. Read it now; read it ten years from now and every decade following. You will appreciate its good sense more and more as years pass.

A good book with a poor title.

I still have the paper back copy of this book that I bought back in 1989. Its pages are worn from being read over and over.

The advice given in this book is good, common sense investing advice that will stand the test of time. The only times I have gotten in trouble with my investments is when I failed to follow his advice. Thanks in part to this book I was able to retire back in 1996 at the age of 56. I'm still retired and enjoying it. Two other books that helped me were "Work Less & Play More" by Steven Catlin and "Cashing in on the American Dream" by Paul Terhorst.
