I loved this book!

It had lots of interesting information about the Duke family, of which I am a descendant. My Great Grandmother was a Duke--the ones who moved to Tennessee. She and her husband came to our house and stayed overnight occasionally when I was a child. This author did extensive research to put all of this together and made it really interesting. I was surprised that our ancestors were a part of the Underground Railroad. I appreciate that this book was written, for it made me aware of our history--things I had never heard before. I enjoyed learning what things were like for people in "those days". I had always heard of Doris Duke, but knew nothing about her life and death. Her story was a real-life novel in itself! I thank the author for taking the time and having the interest to do so much research and compile the information into a book for all of us to enjoy. My children are all planning to read it.

Awesome, detailed, colorful, accurate read of the Duke family legacy!

I just finished reading this awesome book! Washington Duke started the Duke legacy, and my ancestory comes from his dad's brother's line that settled in Cannon County, TN. Since I spent time there every summer & throughout the year, many details felt familiar & brought back memories long forgotten. It was a close knit clan devoted to faith, family & charity - they were also a hard working, industrious family. Big on rights & freedom for all people, I learned that my direct ancestors were part of the underground railroad, risking their lives to free many slaves, right in Cannon County. I am grateful for the memories & stories that were passed along, and for the passion & time that D Dw Duke​ put into gathering all the stories & details & putting them into an interesting & enjoyable read! It made a lot of history make sense! You will especially enjoy this if you are a Duke!

Memior of a Duke Cousin.

There are many Duke cousins. All are related but not directly like the Washington Duke cousins. This book has clear print and is easily read. The
flamboyant "tell all" books lack the sincerity and truth of this carefully written book. I enjoyed this book and those cousins who passed it along
had since words of praise, too.

Yo Sushi Cookbook

'Yo Sushi' is a wonderful book showing the techniques and method of Japanese cooking. It is clear to cook from and the direction and explanations are excellent. There is a brief introduction to Sushi and Japanese cooking and the terms used etc and then it's on to the recipes, which covers some from the restaurants and a few additional ones for this book. This book gradually increases in difficulty as you progress through the recipes and by the end you should be a fairly competent home sushi cook. This is beautifully illustrated with mouth watering photography and the overall design and format is very pleasing on the eye. If you like Sushi and always fancied giving it a try then this is the place to start and before long you'll be creating your own mini masterpieces to delight in and enjoy.

Making Japanese at home is easy

When we were in England we were impressed by a unique fast sushi restaurant that had conveyor belts running through the restaurant with colorful bowls of food. Just pick the one you want and they tally it up at the end. When I discovered the cookbook I was thrilled to be able to replicate my families favorites from our trip. The cookbook is easy to understand and follow, some of the items must be purchased at an Asian grocery and are not available at the main chain stores. So far the dishes have turned out well. It is a fun book to own.

Over 100 recipes, all wonderful!

Didn't get it here, but I feel the need to tell you about this wonderful book! This book makes complicated dishes approachable and fun to cook. I've been picking about 2 new recipes a week to try out and they've all been wonderful.

I would recommend this book over many of the alternatives, especially for the price. Some books may have more recipes, but likely, they have fewer worth while recipes.

An Entertaining Read...

I have never been a fan of Beyonce, and given the number of die-hards that make up the "Bey-hive" I've often wondered if there was something wrong with me. I say this because when I've watched her perform it's obvious she was put here to perform. And when I've watched her interact with the public, be it her fans or media, she always comes across as gracious. But for some reason I've always suspected that lying somewhere behind the face she puts forth to the world would be the REAL Beyonce. I was expecting Mr. Taraborrelli to take a sledge hammer to this artfully crafted facade, but instead he creates a compelling narrative that delves into the mystique behind Beyonce Knowles.
I found that I can appreciate the hard work and talent that went into crafting Beyonce's career stemming back through various incarnations of the girl group that would ultimately become Destiny's Child. I was impressed by the "walking out on faith" Beyonce's parents did during the lean times to help their daughter realize her dreams.
Because some of the behind the scenes drama was very reminiscent of what happened with Diana Ross and the Supremes(or any other girl group for that matter), I was expecting Beyonce to carry much of the same personality and temperament of a petulant diva , but I must say, Beyonce has never sought to be unnecessarily difficult with people or a show-off that upstages people, but rather relied on her talent to propel her into becoming the best Beyonce she could be.
My lasting impression is that there was a lot of sweeping of family issues under carpets, which I think contributed to Beyonce's compartmentalizing of things, a trait that she apparently learned from her mother. I also left the story feeling that while Mathew Knowles sacrificed much for the sake of both of his daughters aspirations, there are times when he comes off as plain selfish i.e his incessant cheating.
I found myself hitting YouTube to check out some of her videos, both with and without Destiny's Child.
Did I walk away a fan? No, but I did walk away with a profound respect for Beyonce's artistry and work ethic. She's an exemplar of what talent and hard work can yield.

I am not a Beyonce fan. I purchased this book largely as a fan of J. Randy Taraborelli and his previous works, which I often found balanced and informative. I hoped to see the same here-an intimate portrait of a closely guarded superstar. Unfortunately, there is very little revealed about Beyonce here that isn't already known, even by someone like myself who has generally paid her only a passing interest over the years. That is not really surprising, considering her public persona over the years. But the really disappointing thing was the lack of proper editing, fact-checking (for example, the incorrect statement that Beyonce won a Golden Globe for her work in "Dreamgirls",something that can be checked online in less than a minute"), and proofreading. The only place Taraborelli succeeds is in a painting a sympathetic image of a girl who, at the heart of it all, just wanted to sing, and worked hard to become a star. While I am still not a fan of Beyonce or her music, I appreciate the dedication it took for her to get where she is.

Amazing and detailed biography!

Ive been a fan of J. Randy Taraborrelli since his legendary book, "Call Her Miss Ross". When I heard he was doing a biography on Beyonce, I knew I was in for a treat. I was not disappointed! The author takes the reader through the ups, downs, the flattering and not so flattering parts of Beyonce's evolution to pop phenomenon. With her being notorious and downright obsessive about her privacy, I figured that Taraborrelli wouldn't get much information, but get it he did and much more. I found it to be an easy and captivating read and I spent all day in bed finishing it. Well done!

I highly recommend this book for high school, college and university students. It provides clear, step-by-step instructions on how to research and write research papers. Before I found this book I struggled with writing research papers and received B's for my effort, after I bought this book and followed the easy to read instructions, I achieved A+ on all my research papers and ultimately my classes. I recommend this books especially for high school students because learning the right way to write research papers and the whole process of research writing takes time to master and should be learned while in high school so that when you enter college or university you know how to write the many papers you will be asked to write. Each page of this book is packed with good advice and need to know information that, if you read carefully and follow exactly, will help you achieve the grades you want. More than that, there are tons of tips and tricks that make the process of writing research papers more interesting, easy and enjoyable. I have used this book and the A+ grades I received on my papers are a testament to the great instructions and advice that guide you every step of the way in this remarkable book.

About the Author

Steven Cohen is executive director of Columbia University's Earth Institute and professor in the practice of public affairs at the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). He is also director of the masters program in sustainability management at Columbia's School of Continuing Education. At SIPA, Cohen directs the MPA in environmental science and policy, as well as the concentration in energy and environmental policy. He has served as a policy analyst and consultant to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other government agencies. His books include Sustainability Management: Lessons from and for New York City, America, and the Planet and The Effective Public Manager, now in its fourth edition. Cohen is also a regular contributor to the Huffington Post.

Excellent book on policy

Professor Cohen (Now a vice-dean at Columbia University) presents a very easy to read and understand framework for interpreting environmental issues. To illustrate this, he applies his framework to a number of cases - toxic spills, the New York garbage crisis and more which underlines the different policy angles from which a specific environmental issue can be viewed. I highly recommend this book to any undergrad studying environmental policy and any graduate student looking to use a specific methodology for research.

This past winter I read the book above [Understanding Environmental Policy] thoroughly and really like the clarity of the "framework". It was especially useful how professor Cohen concludes with a call for constant improvement of the framework model and ultimately "manage" the situation/condition appropriately.

I should have started with this book a long time ago

If only I had found it sooner!!

This book is great. It gives you pointers on drawing manga characters that I think all "how to draw manga" books should have. You want to learn more then how to draw a basic 3/4 view head? Tired of the same beginner crap that all how to draw so and so books seem to ONLY have? This is the book for you! It's intermediate, yes, but in my opinion this is the book I've been waiting for since I started drawing anime characters!

Think you can't be a manga/anime artist? Feel like your missing something instrumental? This book will teach you how to make your character have that "vibe", and point things out that will move you on from flat simple character renditions to what you know is really inside that character.

Get it while you still can!
