The Wiley Book of Business Quotations by Henry Ehrlich is a wide-ranging collection of quotations by contemporary business men and women on a great variety of subjects, including international business. The book reflects a great deal of scholarship that is not found in most of today's quotation books, including meticulous documentation. I own 1,500 quotation books and this has been a valuable addition to my collection.

Business comes alive

This is the only book of business quotations I've ever encountered that lays out what really happens in business life. It's like listening to the proverbial guy at the water cooler, he lowers his voice--you lean closer, knowing you're getting the necessary tidbits to survive the job. You know you're hearing the truth. What's surprising in this book, is that the water cooler guy is often the CEO speaking. Who knew these big guns talked so bluntly? Gone it seems are veils of public relations and smooth, life-as-it-should-be speak. It's a terrific read of business in the late 20th century.

Good stuff

I've always been impressed with the artwork with Warcraft, so books like these are always a treat. Although this one didn't have as much artwork as the first artbook the released "the Art of Warcraft", it still made an impact.

The book arrived a couple of weeks before I expected it, so that was great and I am very happy with the delivery process.

But I am not so happy with the book. It is not bad, but I think that there is too little concept art. I mean, in the race concept art, you find a lot of 3D images of the game and that's not concept, that's result, and I think they could have put more sketches or illustrations. The whole layup is a bit messy.

I bought this book beacause I am a big fan of wacraft and world of warcraft, and I expected as concept art book, something like the Starcraft 2 artbook. I imagine that this difference between layup quality is simply because they got better at doing them. That is the price of practice.

Anyway this book is a must have for all fans.

The book I got was in excellent condition, and when I looked through it. Wow! I was blown away. It's extraordinary. Such and incredible piece of art! There is so much to learn from the artists in it, and it'll be such a great inspiration. One of the best books I have ever bought!

Better for people who already like Araki's works, but an interesting and worthwhile comic

I'm a huge fan of Hirohiko Araki and his comics, so when I heard that Rohan at the Louvre was being published in English, there was no question I'd buy it; in fact, I already had it in the Japanese magazine serialization and the hardcover French edition. It's a five-star for me, or for several other groups of people, but there are some problems with this volume regardless.

It's a gorgeous volume; the hardcover binding isn't too hard or too flimsy-feeling, like a nicer picture book. The printing quality is excellent, and while the author is known and loved for occasionally garish color use, the beautiful coloration on the interior pages is soft and dreamy, with colors reminiscent of early 1900s children's books accented with splashes of blacks and brights. If you're a fan of Hirohiko Araki's art, you want this regardless of whether or not you like the story as the single most inexpensive "artbook" you'll ever find.

The story is a decent standalone; its themes are similar to some of the other Rohan short story one-shots that haven't been published in English, but that's not necessarily a drawback. What is a drawback is that you really will get far more out of this comic if you have already read some of Araki's other work including Rohan Kishibe as a character, none of which has ever been published in English. There's a charming scene where three characters from Diamond is Unbreakable show up to say a few lines; for a dedicated Araki fan this is a wonderful shout-out, but for someone who hasn't read those comics, you might be left wondering who these people are. In fact, while Rohan's "ability" is explained very simply in the first few pages, its name is never given; if you're a pre-existing fan you might know that it's Heaven's Door, but when Rohan later refers to it AS "Heaven's Door", it's not explained, nor are some of the mechanics of how Heaven's Door works which wind up being crucial to the comic. I loaned my copy to someone who had no previous knowledge of Araki's works, and while they enjoyed it, they were a bit confused. Even so, it's a nice self-contained story, and the Louvre setting elements add to the story rather than feeling like they were shoehorned in just for product placement.

As far as the English editing and translation goes... The translation itself is quite good; it preserves the distinctive speaking style of the original comic while still being readable (delightfully so, in fact) in English, and the section in the back about the Louvre collections is a good primer for those who've never been there. However, as a long-time manga reader some of the editing is a bit sub-par. There's a few typos near the end, and some rather dubious typeface usage that I really don't agree with. The fact that the dialogue and the SFX subtitles are all set in the same typeface is a bit jarring as well.

I'd recommend this to anybody who enjoys the art of Hirohiko Araki, or to anybody with an interest both in artwork and in horror stories (because this IS a rather creepy horror story, with some pages full of strange gore). It isn't a perfect book, nor is it a perfect edition, but it's still good enough to have a place on my shelf for years.

The usual Araki greatness, but larger pages could've benefited from more color.

I will preface by saying that this book assumes you're caught up with Jojo up to the end of the fourth arc. Being that this book is released by the Louvre publishing company, it's readily available for print at the museum and online shops. But passers-by may be confused by its plot, if they become intrigued by the artwork alone. And they should; Araki's stuff is some of the best and most detailed in the manga world. Sometimes, however, it can be TOO detailed for the smaller manga panels, but in this large paper print it works handsomely.

As many readers familiar with the arcs may guess, Rohan at the Louvre is its own side story that has nothing to do with the main series. Rohan's adventure happens in two parts. The first half seems to happen before the events in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. The second half happens either during or after the events of the fourth arc, so it seems.

The story itself is very interesting and captivating. I'm usually not a fan of side stories because I feel they're not as polished or intricate as the main story. Readers are already so heavily invested in the main series that side stories usually get in the way, often harming a character by delving too much into their background for their own good. But this side story is great, and really can act as one of the subplots of the main story, since there are so many anyway.

As an amateur author, I admire Araki's mastery over his characters. He's created hundreds, and each has their own unique personality setting them apart from the rest; even the smallest of characters who appear for no more than a few panels have some depth.
The artwork is gorgeous, as you'd expect from anything by Araki. Glorious poses are all there, but I feel that sometimes some of the coloring looks either washed out or like there's some bleeding. With such freedom of page size, Araki could've benefited from giving his pages more color, or else contracting someone to do it for him.

Of course, the plot takes extreme liberties with its environment. Seeing as Araki has infiltrated the Louvre and its secrets, the publishing company saw fit to add an addendum at the end that highlights that the work is entirely fictional, as well as its depiction of the museum. Like we didn't already know that.
Ah, well. The museum's gotta protect its integrity, even if readers of its published works already know fact from fiction.

A great and must-read for fans of Araki. People unfamiliar with the source material may be confused--actually, they WILL be confused--but the artwork itself is enough to admire. Still, I highly, HIGHLY recommend newbies to read Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.
Unfortunately, only the third arc has been translated (thanks to Viz), but there are dedicated fan "scanlations" (scanned translations) that have brought Araki's masterwork to western audiences. I won't mention any sites due to possible legal conflicts, but they exist. Use your preferred search engine to find them. They're worth the read and time-suck.

Rohan Rocks!

I loved this book. "Rohan at the Louvre" reminds me of a Poe poem brought to life, almost the Casque of Amontilado, this time, the Art of Araki brings the same intense feeling of dread, release, and love lost.

The art is stunning, and the story is evocative of much, much, more. The question of what art is, is central to the story. What emotion does art evoke in its' viewers? What inspired the art? What part does the art play in history? The last painting by Nizaemon was so much more, was a mystery unlike any other. Reading this reminds me of the Black Museum radio series, actually, this could be an episode of such.

The book is a good example of exactly why NBM has risen to the top of the graphic novel realm. Their Papercutz products are award winning, and these should be too.

This comes highly recommended for art (almost Gil Kanish), story telling, and the international favor it brings to our book shelves.

Let them eat cake!

This book, by Roger Pizey, contains recipes for layer cakes, loaf cakes, cheesecakes, and little cakes like macarons and madeleines. There's even a recipe for canelés, an intensely flavored mini cake from Bordeaux. Pizey, currently the executive chef at Marco Pierre White's London restaurant, Marco, also includes the recipe for the lemon tart from another one of White's restaurants, Harvey's. And even without knowing any of this, I detected a British influence as I read through the book the first time. There are no decadent, over-the-top, American-style superindulgences in World Class Cakes, (although there is a rather nice version of Boston Cream Pie). Rather, the cakes are indeed "world class," and include treats from Brazil, Japan, and Scandinavia.

One can't review a cookbook without actually trying a couple of the recipes. While so many of them caught my eye at first--and many of them involved ingredients I usually have on hand--I settled on the simple Cardamom Coffee Cake. Baked in a bundt pan, the cake involved the basics--butter, flour, eggs--but called for superfine sugar. Actually, all of the recipes in World Class Cakes that call for white sugar call for superfine sugar, and that's really the only issue I have with the book. I usually keep a box on hand, but it's not the easiest product to find, even in our over-stocked American supermarkets. So while superfine sugar melts faster and perhaps produces a finer texture to cakes, the 50,000,000 other cake recipes that involve regular sugar can't be wrong. I used plain old granulated sugar, but if you're a stickler for following directions, whiz your sugar in a food processor or high-speed blender for a minute or so to make your own superfine.

Back to that cake. As befitting its name, it was strongly cardamom-flavored and its slightly dry texture went exceptionally well with a cup of coffee. Tea, too.

I also tried the recipe for chocolate whoopie pies, and they were a big success. The batter spread just enough to form perfect little cakelets, which I then sandwiched with marshmallow. Beware the lemon whoopie pie recipe, however--it doesn't have enough flour in it, so it will not work. If you want to make them anyway, increase the flour until it equals the amount of flour + cocoa in the chocolate pie recipe.

So--a fun book, all in all, with recipes for cakes most folks have never heard of that are pretty intriguing and seem pretty easy. And the photography and food styling is great, making everything look very accessible and not imposingly fancy. I'm sure I'll reach for my copy many times in the future.

Ooooh, I love this book!

Having about 300 cookbooks, I'm a bit jaded. I frequently see books that are nice but rarely do I see something that is actually new and exciting to me. Well, this book is! It is beautifully photographed and bursting with exotic recipes from all over the world. The chapters include sponge and layer cakes; fruit, nut and seed cakes; sheet cake and bars; cheesecakes; leavened cakes; and celebration cakes. But the headings don't begin to describe the contents. There are recipes for angel food cakes, chiffon cakes, bee sting cake, Brazilian bolo de Cuba made with cornmeal and flavored with anise, red velvet cake, Boston cream pie, cassata, Mexican flourless chocolate cake flavored and decorated with chiles,cakes made with ale ... I could go on and on. Plus special features on bakeries in Berlin, Paris, Tokyo and other cities. The directions are simple and anyone with a modicum of baking experience should be able to make the simpler cakes. Then either work your way up to making croquembouche and Swedish tower cake or maybe just enjoy reading the recipes and looking at the beautiful pictures.

A feast for the eyes and the palette!! While definitely not for the beginning baker, this is a great cookbook full of recipes for amazing cakes. The book is divided into sections that start with Sponges & Layer Cakes and end with Celebration Cakes. Each recipe starts with a small blurb about the cake and its history. Several of the recipes have a page beside it titled "Where to Eat Cake..." and a location that gives multiple great places to find local baking. There are lots of pictures throughout the book, which is a big plus. It's always nice to know what the finished product is supposed to look like when you're making something completely new.

When I first get a cookbook, I usually flip through it and find a couple of recipes that I want to try the most. That was not possible with this book. If I had marked every recipe I couldn't wait to try, the book would look like a porcupine with markers sticking out all over! I started with Sonhos, Portugese "dreams" doughnuts. Oh, my! These were a HUGE hit with my girls!! I didn't use the optional 4th egg, and I'm really glad I didn't. I think these would have been to eggy tasting if I'd used the 4th. Make sure and cook them plenty long enough--they'll split slightly and puff up much larger than expected when they're done. My first batch I didn't leave long enough and they were slightly doughy inside, but all the rest were amazing!! Definitely try the Turkish Lemon Cake, Tippaleipa (Finnish Funnel Cakes), and the Devil's Food Cake!

One downside to this book is quite a few ingredients may be semi to very hard to find. If you live in an area with many specialty shops or are comfortable buying online, that may not be a big issue to me, but it was fairly frustrating to me.

If you are a beginning baker, you might have some trouble with some of these recipes, but if you're at least somewhat experienced I recommend this book! I gave it 4 out of 5 because of the more advanced nature, and the fact that there are many harder-to-find ingredients.

Australia's best-selling nonfiction author of all time. Douglas Mawson, born in 1882 and knighted in 1914, was Australia's greatest Antarctic explorer. On 2 December 1911, he led an expedition from Hobart to explore the virgin frozen coastline below, 2000 miles of which had never felt the tread of a human foot. After setting up Main Base at Cape Denision and Western Base on Queen Mary Land, he headed east on an extraordinary sledging trek with his companions, Belgrave Ninnis and Dr Xavier Mertz. After five weeks, tragedy struck. Ninnis was swallowed whole by a snow-covered crevasse, and Mawson and Mertz realised it was too dangerous to go on. With the scant food and provisions they had left, turning back was almost equally perilous. Their dwindling supplies forced them to kill their dogs to feed the other dogs, at first, and then themselves. Hunger, sickness and despair eventually got the better of Mertz, and he succumbed to madness and then to death. Mawson found himself all alone, 160 miles from safety, with next to no food. Peter FitzSimons tells the staggering tale of Mawson's survival, despite all the odds, arriving back just in time to see his rescue ship disappearing over the horizon. He also masterfully interweaves the stories of the other giants from the Heroic Age of Polar Exploration - Scott of the Antarctic, Sir Ernest Shackleton and Roald Amundsen - to bring the jaw-dropping events of this bygone era dazzlingly back to life.

The RAF At (mostly) Night

The major offensive by Great Britian against Germany durring World War II was Bomber Command attacks at night. This attack was a failure. The RAF killed a lot of civilans but lost an unacceptable number of aircrew durring this campaign. This book gives a daily listing of every sortie Bomber Command made durring the war. Every target is described, the number and types of planes that attacked each target and the losses Bomber Command sufffered attacking each target. This book has a small target readership, but it does a great job giving the reader the facts. Recommended.
