Very strong read

The Frozen Pirate is a rollicking good time. Sure the science is out there, but who cares! A frozen pirate and what happens to him, survival trapped in the ice, treasure, that makes a good story. Admittedly, the dialogue is a bit dated at the end, but that's forgivable and there clearly is no malice. The protagonist is an interesting narrator - I disagree with him at times, but that's fine also.

Well worth picking up a free copy.

Over 130 years old and very exciting. I got it free on Kindle. What a read. I am a sailor and it was like I was there. This is a real wakeup for old books for me.

Great book! A little difficult to read at times due to old fashioned wording. Historical survival story takes place in the Antartic with a touch of paranormal activity. Enjoyed it!

About the Author
Bradley Cantrell is Principal of and Partner in Visual Logic Inc. and a founding partner in LND Digital Workshop, digital media training and consulting. He is also Assistant Professor, School of Landscape Architecture, Louisiana State University. He received an MLA II from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design with a concentration in digital site representation and interactive spaces.

Wes Michaels is a principal of Spackman+Mossop+Michaels Landscape Architects and a partner in LND Digital Workshop, digital media training and consulting. He is also an Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture, Louisiana State University. He received an MLA from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.

Strong Book For Digital Workflow

Concise, well-written book that bridges the gap for new learners and more seasoned digital renderers. Cantrell and Michaels offer a fantastic overview of how to improve workflow speed and the finished product. Some underlying knowledge of the Adobe Suite is necessary, but will still be beneficial for those new to importing .pdfs from CAD to Photoshop, Illustrator,etc. Loads of helpful images, well-described how-to's, and tricks that will give your projects an extremely impressive look. Minor quibble, a couple of sections feel "rushed" toward the end as far as the steps. For instance, the collage section feels like it could have had a bit more detail and polish like some of the earlier sections. Again, minor, minor issue. Otherwise, go for it without regret. For Landscape Arch students, this is a must. Consider it the digital version of Grant Reid's Landscape Graphics.

Great Book!

Digital Drawing for Landscape Architecture gives you a good understanding of how to use a variety of programs in conjunction with each other. It gives good examples of what program to use for specific graphic presentations and does so in a very clear and concise way. Many of the techniques discussed can easily be applied to disciplines other than Landscape Architecture and I would highly recommend the book to anyone involved in creating digital graphic presentations for any of the design professions. I teach a course a course called "Integrated Computer Graphics" and I plan on using it for my main text. Well done!

About the Author

Dr. Socorro G. Herrera

Dr. Herrera serves as a professor of elementary education at Kansas State University and directs the Center for Intercultural and Multilingual Advocacy (CIMA) in the College of Education. Her K–12 teaching experience includes an emphasis on literacy development. Her research focuses on literacy opportunities with culturally and linguistically diverse students, reading strategies, and teacher preparation for diversity in the classroom. Dr. Herrera has recently published two books with Allyn and Bacon: Mastering ESL and Bilingual Methods: Differentiated Instruction for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students (2005) and Assessment Accommodations for Classroom Teachers of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students (2007). Dr. Herrera has authored articles for numerous nationally known journals, such as the Bilingual Research Journal, Journal of Hispanic Higher Education, Journal of Research in Education, and the Journal of Latinos and Education.

 

Dr. Della R. Perez

Dr. Perez serves as an assistant professor of elementary education at Kansas State University and is the Associate Director of Undergraduate Programming at the Center for Intercultural and Multilingual Advocacy (CIMA) in the College of Education. Her research has focused on literacy development and instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse students and parental involvement. Dr. Perez has published The Five Components of Reading Development: A Classroom Teacher’s Guide to Scaffolding Reading Instruction for ELL Students (2006) and ELL Literacy Interventions: Accommodations and Acceleration for Reading Success (2005). Dr. Perez also has co-authored a book chapter for Culturally Responsive Teacher Education: Language, Curriculum, and Community (2008).

 

Dr. Kathy Escamilla

Dr. Escamilla is a professor of education at the University of Colorado, Boulder. She has been a bilingual teacher, program administrator, and professor for over 37 years. She helped to develop the Spanish reconstruction of Reading Recovery (Descubriendo la Lectura), which was published in the book Instrumento de observación de los logros de la leco-escritura inicial (Heinemann). She has done extensive research in the area of literacy for Spanish-speaking children in the United States and has authored over 40 journal articles in this area. She served two terms as the President of the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) and works as a technical assistant and consultant for bilingual/ESL programs nationwide.

Good information and helpful strategies for Reading Teachers.

I purchased this text book for my Reading Master's Program. I have read the majority of the text, and have found it quite helpful. It has a lot of good information and strategies that work for ELL students. It helps to make things easier to understand for a beginning Reading Teacher or Master of Reading student. It was a bit dry, but then again, it IS a text book, so that is to be expected. Overall, I am happy with this text, and will definitely keep it to use in the future.

GREAT BOOK for teaching! What a difference this book makes for understanding how to differentiate instruction for ELL students! My only criticism is that I wished that this book provided more intervention strategies for writing difficulties, but this isn't the author's fault because there isn't much research to date in this category.

Best historical novel I've read in 10 years

I've never been a fan of Follett, and picked this book up with some misgivings - anyone these days can try to do an "historical" novel with some quick sex, some fake archaic new-speak, and a TV-movie-miniseries concept of history. While there are some minor flaws in this book, its sweep, characterization, tensions, and love of its subject are simply riveting. I could not put the darned thing down and have lost sleep for a week compulsively page-turning. Follett, unbelievably, seems to have made little splash with this book when it first came out - more shame to the critics who missed a "Gone With the Wind" from a conventional thriller author.
His primary strength in the book is his magnificent characters. By the end, Prior Phillip, Aliena, Jack, Richard, "Witch" Ellen, William of Hamleigh, Waleran Bigod, and a host of supporting characters are as real as people you know. Their strengths and weaknesses feel as sound as earth. I've just reached the part where the Cathedral is finished, and its magnificent image, built in love, hardship, and devotion, colors the whole book like light through stained glass. And I suspect the ending will be as immensely "right" as the entire rest of the book in its proportion in spinning out complicated human lives and emotions.
Follett manages to write of an age of religious devotion without tumbling into the two pits - making fun of medieval Christian faith, or uncritically adopting it. An IMMENSELY satisfying read.
I could quibble with what I feel is some gratuitous sex, some slightly contrived plot twists, but that's like complaining about some flotsam in the river as you're going over Niagara.
DO NOT MISS THIS BOOK if you love wonderful story-spinning and history.

an excellent piece of historical fiction

I actually listened to this book on tape, while my wife read the paperback. Both of us loved it. I not only recommend the book, but also urge people to rent the Book on Tape version, narrated by David Case, whose acting and narrative talents shine through, bringing the various characters to life. (But still purchase the book from Amazon!) I came to Pillars of the Earth after spending about two solid years reading, in my spare time, nothing but medieval histories, with a focus on fourteenth century England and the Plantagenet kings. I had never before read a book by Follett, who I had assumed mass-produced pulp spy fiction. I only chose the book because of of my interest in medieval history. To my delight and surprise, I discovered the book to be a true work of literature, which might well still be read in 100 years. I found myself amazed by Follett's ability to create an extremely complex and compelling plot, with compelling characters, against a backdrop that seemed true to the histories I had been reading. The early twelfth century is a period neglected by us moderns; but it's one that's inherently interesting. Who, today, has even heard of King Stephen (who preceded the famous Henry II, immortalized twice by Peter O'Toole in the 1960s movies Beckett and Lion in Winter)? Because, in England at least, Stephen's reign was a time of virtual anarchy, Follett was able to use the period to create characters who demonstrate the brutal lengths to which people can go when unconstrained by law and an effective legal order. At the same time, though, he has created religious and other well-meaning characters who, if alien to us because of their belief in Hell and a God intervening almost minute-by-minute in human afairs, display courage and the best of intentions in the harsh face of barbarism. This juxtaposition of the brutal and the well-meaning makes for an interesting meditation on human nature and on the hope for the gradual further civilization of our species. His ultimate message is encouraging, though he certainly doesn't shrink from depicting the nastiness of which humans are capable. In short, the book is a marvelous piece of fiction, in which Follet has done an excellent job capturing the feeling of a distant and neglected period of history.

Not an Oprah follower, but I love this book

Personally, I don't place a lot of stock in Oprah's book club lottery. The instant stardom that placement on this reading list bestows authors isn't always, in my opinion, justified. That being said, this is a wonderful book.

Pillars is complex, moving and informative. The research was excellent, the characters are engaging and the story moves at a surprisingly quick pace for a novel of this length. The descriptions of the scenes, the completeness of the political interplay and the twists of the plot make this one of my favorite books of all time. Normally, I have little patience for historical fiction unless it brings something new or truly engaging to the table. Pillars certainly does that and more.

In other words, while there is no such thing as the perfect book, this one comes very close. My advice is simple...READ THIS BOOK -- YOU'LL LOVE IT!

But do yourself a small favor, go to the used bookstore or the library, this is not a new release and you can enjoy Follett's favorite work for a fraction of the cost. A quick search of Amazon shows dozens of options that don't have the Oprah name or any other bells and whistles that I'm sure are unneeded to enjoy this spectacular piece of fiction

Better at jokes, than explaining them

This is yet another sterile, wandering attempt to make observations and draw conclusions about types of jokes. The difference here is that very many of the jokes are quite amusing, and many are not widely circulated. ("We ate the last cannibal, yesterday.") I.e., it's a good book to learn some jokes for parties. One chapter, unfortunately, on Auschwitz, is grossly offensive. I'd recommend skipping it, as soon as you confirm this for yourself.

How much would you give up to live your dreams?

Out Of Position is the second novel set in Kyell Gold's contemporary anthropomorphic 'Forester' universe, and the more mature. Like the previous book, OOP is a coming-out story and a gay romance centered on two characters: Lee, a fox, outspoken and an activist, and the closeted football-playing tiger, Devlin, he inadvertently comes to love. Told from alternating first-person perspectives, the story follows Devlin's career as he graduates from college football to the professional league and his relationship with Lee, as they attempt to reconcile their love with the homophobic, high-pressure world of pro football.

Like Waterways, the previous book in this series, OOP is notable for the author's emphasis on characterization and dialogue. The cast is somewhat smaller this time, but the two central figures, Lee and Dev, are both compelling, believable, and subtly rendered. This is not a novel about youths, but a mature story about the end of youth and the compromises we make in the process.

The fact that this novel centers on football may concern some potential readers, but have no fear - this reviewer could hardly have less interest in the game, but its presence in OOP did not make the story any less enjoyable. The sport is explained early on for the benefit of ignorant readers like this reviewer, and each appearance in the text drives the plot forward.

The coming-out story is a classic theme in gay fiction. If the previous book drew on the internal struggle to accept our sexuality, this novel looks at the public aspect - the sacrifices we make as adults to achieve our goals in a straight world. OOP is not just good furry literature - it is simply good literature: entertaining, ably-written, and authentic.

Most novels of this particular genre are short affairs with poor characterisation and little to no plot. Out of Position is neither of these. Dev and Lee are two truly wonderful characters, as are the cast of minor characters who come and go. The plot is detailed and thoroughly enjoyable, as well as quite gripping. Though it probably isn't the best book to read on the bus to work, I simply couldn't put this down for long enough to endure such a journey.
This is very much a stand-out book in its genre.
Looking forward to the sequel with much anticipation.

I am impressed! Really enjoyed this one!

My first anthropomorphic novel and the added bonus is that it tells of a gay relationship between a tiger and a fox. Odd couple ? But it works and it is a rewarding experience following their developing relationship and love from the time Dev finds out that his "girl" fox, Lee, was really a guy all the way to Dev coming out to the public and acknowledging their relationship. Not easy as Dev is a true jock in the world of football and Lee is involved in LGBT activities. But their love for each other pull them through be it confronting Lee's parents, wading off Lee's hostile activist friend or facing off Dev's team mates and the media. And there is an honesty in their romance which I really enjoy. And the sex is hot! Definitely looking up for more from this writer.

Outstanding explanation to Lean Mapping

Strategic Lean Mapping can be seen as a very confusing and complicated process if you are not familiar with the process. Like myself, being new to the whole idea, I was intimidated by the idea of actually having to Map out processes. With the help of this very easy to read and understand book, I now feel very confident in the fact that I can not only perform the process of lean mapping but have actually began to teach others within our organization about Lean Mapping. I found this book very easy to understand and the reading is great because it is not written at a level that is hard for the average person to comprehend. The ideas and the concept is laid out in a very precise but simple way by the author. I would recommend anyone wishing to become more familiar with Lean Mapping read this book!!! Wooow, Steven Borris made this thing very simple and easy to be understood not just for professional but also for beginners and for anyone want to learn Lean Mapping and start implement this in his company.

I have enjoyed reading every bit of the book. Although I have read only 2 chapters, but I decided to give my comment here now because the book looks very impressive.

I spend all my free time reading it even in the early morning when the car is driving me to the work!.

Steven Borris is a great adviser, I would also recommend buying his other book TPM which is very informative for those who are involved in the maintenance improvement process.
