I had read that math in focus requires the teacher to have a good math background

Although I purchased my copy of this book somewhere else (I did buy the extra practice on amazon), I feel it is my homeschool-mom duty to express my views about it anywhere I can. First, it's a very expensive math option for the year since it's split up into two books. I bought this towards the end of my kid's 5th grade year because we'd finished our previous math early. I was interested in this program because it seemed to have high standards which are sometimes lacking in math curriculums made for homeschoolers (in my humble opinion). I had read that math in focus requires the teacher to have a good math background, and I felt ok about this since I'm a former Kumon center owner. First, there are very few problems for the student to work in the book. In one section, there was one problem for the student to work independently before the chapter was over. One! So I quickly discovered I'd have to spend another $30 in order for my student to be able to do any practicing. Then we really ran into trouble when there were problems in the chapter reviews that were unlike anything represented in the chapter; so very frequently, a new element is added in the chapter review. And there were a few problems that neither my husband nor I (both decent mathematicians) could figure out, even employing more advanced procedures than had been taught. I felt a little better after reading reviews by middle school teachers who said some of the problems were just too hard. We're going to finish the year with Math in Focus, but this will definitely be the last time I use it. It makes me said, too, because I like the layout of the concepts, and it'll be back to the drawing board for 7th grade math :(

I just completed the first unit with students and I am very disappointed. The "Recall Prior Knowledge" each unit begins with is so shallow, that if a students needs a little extra practice with a concept - it isn't there. The text books forces students to follow their algorithms exactly. There is not room for personal thinking and shortcuts by the student. They do this by demonstrating the algorithm once or twice then require the student to complete a practice problem with the entire process spelled out but with just a few numbers missing. The student must simply figure out the missing numbers. The next practice problem is missing more numbers from the process. Unfortunately, this leaves no room for a different process. In my opinion, some to the algorithms are great while others are not and forcing you to use them. The text speaks of real problems solving... we just competed factors, multiples, least common multiples, and greatest common factors... no real-world problems associated with this... really. I am stuck with this textbook and it is going to drive me nut. The only good thing I see is later it will do bar modeling.

UPDATE: There is definitely problem solving in later chapters. Some of which is too difficult for even strong math students. I sent quite a few of the tough problems to the HS Algebra teacher so she could use them in her classes. She said only a couple kids per class could complete them correctly without guidance. You will want the teachers guide for this reason, it identifies the problems a basic, intermediate, and advanced. I now assign the problems according to the students abilities. The advanced problems are rarely assigned.

Robust Curriculum
By jj
My son used MIF curriculum all the way and this is in my opinion one of the best math curriculums. If you did not use MIF then this may be difficult to jump into. MIF is challenging and it requires in depth critical thinking and really understanding the concepts, not just plugging in numbers. (Unlike many other teachings in math such as the popular Kumon, which requires little thinking but emphasize repetition and memorization). This curriculum will leave your child very well prepared with a solid foundation in math. I think it's unfortunate that some people don't like MIF because they are lacking in mathematical skills themselves. I am so glad that finally there's a challenging curriculum that's not dumbed down. If you want something solid, check this curriculum out and decide if it's for you. Be prepared to do some thinking and have some fun!
