Big Sky, by Kitty Thomas

Veronica Cason lives in a small apartment with no clear view of the sky. It's uncertain which might crush her first: her debt or the buildings squeezed in so tight that they surround her like ominous sentinels. She can't breathe in the city. Her success is a lie, and her debt is coming to collect her--unless someone else gets there first.

When a stranger offers her a job at a ranch, it feels like salvation, but it could also mean her death if his motives aren't pure. Which door has the tiger behind it? The claustrophobia of the city or ranch life under an open sky?

NOTE: Big Sky is Literary Fiction and is intended for an emotionally mature adult audience. This is not romance. Don't expect a happy ending. If you don't like your mind messed with and your limits pushed, turn back. If you are unfamiliar with this author's work, please try Comfort Food first. If you like that, you *might* like this. No promises. You must be this tall to ride this ride. First three rows will get wet.

Dark is correct
By CC
Most reviewers' description of this book as dark are correct. Veronica, Ronnie, is pretty down on her luck because of bad decisions with money. Luke swoops in and abducts her, taking her to his ranch and forcing her to serve him and his ranch hands, mimicking the behaviors of his dead wife. It gets a bit twisted and taboo toward the end, but psychologically this was intense.

And that's what makes this book good in my opinion. There's no happily ever after here. Shoot, there's barely a happy-for-now in this story, but you watch as Luke slowly changes Veronica until she wants what happens to her. You see into her mind, and even as you cringe in horror, you understand.

Luke was twisted and real messed up. He needed therapy in a bad way, but I found myself liking him in much the same way Veronica did. The same with his ranch hands. I found it interesting that he played upon her latent submissive/masochistic tendencies, mocking her blatant feminist protests. Classic Stockholm's here. But even in the face of his obvious crazy, I couldn't help liking him! That's the hardest part, making it easy to understand how simple it is to slip into the role Veronica was in.

This story makes you wonder how you'd behave in that situation. We aren't immune to the twisted workings of other people - this scenario could happen to anyone to a certain degree- and we'll do whatever is necessary to survive even if that means liking what we initially hate.

A book worth reading.

Where to begin???
By Loves2Read
Veronica is a difficult character to bond with and Luke is a difficult character to even like. This novella (I'm not sure it's long enough to be considered a book but if it is, it's a short one) is an interesting story about a young woman who is up to her eyeballs in debt and living beyond her means in NYC. She loses her job, meets Luke and despite her revulsion for him, she is also attracted.

Then comes the huge reveal (I WON'T do spoilers) and Veronica finds herself on a ranch with Luke. He owns the place and has several ranch hands to help him out. The audience follows Veronica from Manhattan to Vermont and there, she experiences her transformation. I wouldn't compare it from a caterpillar to butterfly unless dubious consent is something you feel must happen for real change to occur in a character.

I have read books like this before, including Club Mephisto and Mercy but this one was just a bit too much like Captive in the Dark (The Dark Duet: Book 1) for me to enjoy. There is a right way and a wrong way to persuade someone they are ready to be a true submissive and that this what they feel like they must have been born to do and although Ms. Thomas' writing is hauntingly beautiful, I don't think this book is for me.

However, it is the writing that wins out every time and although the subject matter left me disturbed at times, I cannot take away from the talents of a truly great writer. For those who enjoy Ms. Thomas' story telling style, this is a perfect addition to your collection.

Don't get me wrong, I love some hardcore BDSM when done the right way. This book still went on my list as one of the best books I have read all year despite my issues with it. It is captivating and well done but my dislike for Luke and my barely tolerable feelings for Veronica are what drove the rating down ultimately. Perhaps if she were a character I could identify with, I would have rated it higher.

Sad Sky
By amazongirl
I was really excited to finally see a new book out by Kitty Thomas, I've read all her books and I really like them BUT...this one didn't hit the mark for me. It's definitely DARK erotica. I was intrigued by the title, the cover and the premise. I really liked the begininning but some things that was done in the book were too dark for me and I couldn't believe they were happening. I've read a lot of erotica and there was one part that was too disturbing for me

***spolier alert***

hormone therapy to produce milk for the men to drink from her. Along with a milking machine to extract milk from her.

**End spoiler alert***

However, getting past all of that I found the book very sad and the fact that Veronica would never live up to Luke's standards because he was so depressed about his dead girlfriend. I felt very unstatisfied in the end but I have hope that maybe Kitty will re-look at this book and perhaps make a sequel to adjust the overall feeling of the book into hope rather than despair.
