Washington Duke is very young when he first realizes there is racial discrimination in the South. About the Author
D. W. Duke is a California attorney and a Duke family historian and genealogist. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan and his Juris Doctor from Washington University School of Law. He holds a fourth-degree black belt conferred by the World Tae Kwon Do Federation in Seoul Korea. He is the author of five books and dozens of articles, mostly concerning the law.

I loved this book!

It had lots of interesting information about the Duke family, of which I am a descendant. My Great Grandmother was a Duke--the ones who moved to Tennessee. She and her husband came to our house and stayed overnight occasionally when I was a child. This author did extensive research to put all of this together and made it really interesting. I was surprised that our ancestors were a part of the Underground Railroad. I appreciate that this book was written, for it made me aware of our history--things I had never heard before. I enjoyed learning what things were like for people in "those days". I had always heard of Doris Duke, but knew nothing about her life and death. Her story was a real-life novel in itself! I thank the author for taking the time and having the interest to do so much research and compile the information into a book for all of us to enjoy. My children are all planning to read it.

Awesome, detailed, colorful, accurate read of the Duke family legacy!

I just finished reading this awesome book! Washington Duke started the Duke legacy, and my ancestory comes from his dad's brother's line that settled in Cannon County, TN. Since I spent time there every summer & throughout the year, many details felt familiar & brought back memories long forgotten. It was a close knit clan devoted to faith, family & charity - they were also a hard working, industrious family. Big on rights & freedom for all people, I learned that my direct ancestors were part of the underground railroad, risking their lives to free many slaves, right in Cannon County. I am grateful for the memories & stories that were passed along, and for the passion & time that D Dw Duke put into gathering all the stories & details & putting them into an interesting & enjoyable read! It made a lot of history make sense! You will especially enjoy this if you are a Duke!

Memior of a Duke Cousin.

There are many Duke cousins. All are related but not directly like the Washington Duke cousins. This book has clear print and is easily read. The
flamboyant "tell all" books lack the sincerity and truth of this carefully written book. I enjoyed this book and those cousins who passed it along
had since words of praise, too.
