Was an ok short story

This story was only an hour read. It had good characters that grew with the short story. There was NO CLIFFHANGER. It could of been explained more and a full story. I might read this again and I would look at other stories by this author.
Overview. A secretary for a law firm is training to take over for the main assistant. The assistant was on vacation for a month. The Secretary was having a hard day but pulled through. Her boss and her talked at the end of the day and he offered to get her help and then offered her a d/s experience. She decides to try it.

Mateusz Bek is a Research Fellow with the Insurance Law Research Group at the University of Southampton. He focuses on Maritime Law, with particular emphasis placed upon Carriage of Goods by Sea, International Trade Law, Marine Insurance and Yachting Law.

Johanna Hjalmarsson is the Informa Senior Research Fellow in Maritime and Commercial Law; Member, Institute of Maritime Law; Member, Insurance Law Research Group; Southampton Law School, University of Southampton.

Denis Nifontov graduated from the University of Bristol in 2008, having studied for an LLB in Law and German, during which he spent a year in Germany studying at the Faculty of Law of the University of Göttingen. Denis then proceeded to read for an LL.M (Maritime Law) at the University of Southampton. Since graduating, Denis has been working in the Marine Insurance industry in the UK.

R Graham Caldwell is a PhD candidate at University of Southampton, currently on sabbatical whilst acting as contract manager for Titan Salvage on the Costa ‘Concordia’ Wreck Removal Project. Graham was called to the Bar at Middle Temple in September 2010.

Dr Alexandros X.M. Ntovas Lecturer at the University of Southampton Law School, where he teaches in the areas of Public International and European Law, with emphasis on dispute settlement and environmental law. He is also Member of the Institute of Maritime Law where he researches and provides legal consultancy on navigational freedoms and practice as well as on issues regarding public aspects of piracy and other issues of contemporary safety and security of ships.

Julie Carlton (Seafarer Safety and Health Manager in MCA) is responsible for implementing the MLC in UK legislation.

Neil Atkinson (Audit Operations Lead) is responsible for putting in place arrangements for the practical implementation of the MCA (e.g. training of surveyors and arranging MLC inspections).

Helpful perspectives for those working in international schools

As an administrator working at an international school in Taiwan, I have been delving into literature on education, particularly books that discuss a number of issues found in international schools. Every essay here is written by a school head, university professor, or teacher with much experience in the international school field, and each has a real contribution to make to this field. For giving me an opportunity to dive down a rabbit's hole with all the research cited in each essay, I am grateful.

The reason for three stars is this: many of the essays included here are too philosophical in their approaches to education to be of practical use for readers. While there is value to be found in these philosophical meanderings, I find the essays that include specific applications, case studies, or those that use examples of current schools exhibiting the philosophy or the ideas at hand, to be the most helpful and the most accessible. Accessibility of essay = easier to understand and relate to = more success to be had by the reader when he/she applies what has been learned in reading the essay.

The chapters that succeed most in contributing helpful advice include chapter 9 ("Professional development and reflective practice"), chapter 11 ("The international school and its community"), and chapter 12 (Moving from school effectiveness to school improvement").

I bought Victor Perera’s book just because the review by “El Picaro” (see the other amazon offer) was so negative, condemning it as “basically … the musing of a left leaning secularized Jew who seems more sympathetic to the Palestinians … Very disappointing.“
Descending from Portuguese Jews myself, Perera’s “Sephardic Journey” disappointed me by no means. During two millennia, the Perera tree had many branches, including a female beauty sequestered by a British corsair, a famous educator in France as well as a proud sugar magnate, early Zionist and anti-Spinozist in Amsterdam. What Perera tells about the experiences of the one sapling of the pear tree which chose to root again in modern Israel is very balanced and considerate, fairly conscious of the centuries of rather peaceful Muslim-Sephardic joint culture in Spain and Portugal.
Reviewer “El Picaro” argues that “although the cross is mentioned in the title, the author and his family all the way back to the expulsion from Spain have very little real experience or impact with Converso/Anusim issues”. Admittedly, Perera’s literary approach to these issues (comparable to Doreen Carvajal’s “A Forgetting River”) differs strongly from the more scholarly books of Stanley Hordes, Joachim Prinz, Nathan Wachtel, Jane Gerber, Miriam Bodian or Janet Liebman Jacobs. However, the letal-vital contrast of cross and pear-tree permeates Perera’s book as its leitmotiv, for instance when he writes about the Catholic Saint Juan de la Cruz (John of the Cross) who was a descendant of Jewish “New Christians” just as cross-revering Saint Theresa de Avila or the lesser saint inquisitor Torquemada who allegedly used the crucifix to have King Ferdinand go ahead with inquisition in spite of Jewish bribes: “Behold the crucifix whom the wicked Judas sold for thirty pieces of silver.” The mind-piercing symbol which dominates the history of anti-semitism figures central also in Perera’s moving childhood experience with his Mayan nanny Chata: This young native American Catholic woman tried to save his Jewish soul by sneaking him into the Guatemalan cathedral “where she had me kneel at the foot of the crucified Christ”, while young Victor’s senses “reeled from the mingled scents of incense and Chata’s blouse as she pressed her firm breasts against the back of my neck; this was the way of allaying my fright of the terrifying naked figure on the cross” (p.231).
Victor Perera wrote this book in his sixties, with the “seasoned melancholy of a Jewish soul” he ascribes to Alan Berliner. Correspondingly to the crucifix as a terribly token of the Godson’s self-sacrificial obedience to his heavenly father, in my view it was not his grandfather’s testament-fixed curse (cursing any of his descendants who would leave Palestine again) which made the grandson Victor decide “not to father children, for fear they would inherit the family curse my sister and I had to grapple with” (p.258). No, the “curse” was rather “the lifelong rage” his father had vented one Guatemalan afternoon “on my frail shoulders, my back and my buttocks”. The terrible, unjustified punishment (reminding me on the harsh childhood punishment a Sephardic friend related to me here in Brazil) had, again, to do with the cross: The innocent little scoundrel had called his mother a bad name whose meaning he as a boy of nine years was unable to grasp; a word he had heard his mother using for the wooden center figure of a Holy Week procession: for the gold-crowned, velvet-gowned Mary, virgin mother of the man on cross.
Subtitled “A Sephardic Journey”, this is a book about the deep dimensions of surface migrations, of pear shoots attempting to sprout between the crosses which sprout quicker at all their destinations. The book starts with the verse “If I forget thee, Jerusalem …” and focuses on a paradox which the author at the end makes flash in his gentile-married friend Marcos Cohen, who told him about how his (Victor’s) father incurred the curse by leaving Haifa for Guatemala: “He taught us all about our prophetic destiny in Eretz Israel, and then he got up and left.”
