The Only Book You'll Need to Save Your Skin (and pocket)

A must-have for every beauty enthusiast who spends thousands of dollars just to look for the next miracle cream because the last one didn't do what it was claimed to.
Written clearly and with a sense of humour The Beauty Bible is literally a bible, explaining with details all the 'You Shalt' and 'You Shalt Not' in cosmetics, including all the hype ingredients, what to do to really have a better skin (it works, I bought her products) and how to prevent future damage. The book also includes a How-To makeup section.
The best part in the book is reading how we are fed with lies by the salespeople and cosmetics companies. I was amazed!
I will never look at the beauty industry the same.

Information that I already knew but I am a glamour girl. If you are new to skin care and make-up then this might be a good book for you. Too elementary for me.

I wish I had this book when I was younger...sound skin care advice.

Reading this book and her other book, Don't go to the cosmetics counter without me, has completely changed how I care for my skin. The author's advice is very practical, realistic, and sane. My skin is clearer, looks much nicer, and feels comfortable for the first time since I was under the age of 10. I remember having dermatologists (yes, actual medical doctors) prescibe harsh bar soaps for cleansing, irritating creams and lotions, and not making any mention of sun protection. It's no wonder I couldn't get my face to clear up! I've probably used every product marketed towards combination skin or acne-prone skin, and none of it has helped. By reading this book, I now understand what I was doing wrong and have put together a skin care routine that actually works. It's just amazing.

Some reviewers have tried to portray this book as a pro-plastic surgery, pro-chemical products, anti-nature, ill-informed rant, but that really couldn't be further from the truth. Paula Begoun is a consumer advocate and is trying to stop people from swallowing all the marketing nonsense that the cosmetics industry feeds us. She's also trying to help people have realistic expectations for what skin care products can do for you. No cream, toner, or serum can remove wrinkles, so she explains that if you really want to remove wrinkles, plastic surgery may be your only option. It's better to know that than to keep wasting tons and tons of money on supposed "miracle" products. She also is trying to debunk another myth the cosmetics industry feeds us, that "natural" equals "good". Look at products like Origins, Aveda, etc. that claim to be "natural" solutions -- they contain miniscule amounts of "natural" extracts and all the same chemicals that all other products have. She's not advocating dousing yourself in chemicals -- she's advocating not buying into the lies these companies use to sell you products.

At any rate, I highly recommend this book to anyone who's ever had trouble with their skin and has tried everything under the sun to improve it. Granted, not every recommendation she makes will work for you, but the bottom line is that with her advice, you can make much, much smarter choices for yourself.

I have to admit, I opened this book with a dismissive attitude. I never read self-help books, haven't looked at one since I'm OK, You'r OK back in the 70s. And a self-help book with diagrams – who thinks they can reduce an abstract idea to a diagram?
I didn't stop at the Introduction, or after the first chapter. In fact I soon found myself lowering the book to my lap, pausing to think about what I'd just read – hmmm, never saw it quite that way before – going back and re-reading a paragraph or two. Still ready to criticize: It's repetitive, same ideas repeated. But, of course, that's how ideas are imprinted and in this book each repetition comes with a bit more elaboration. Even the diagrams, to my surprise, seemed to work; they help the reader visualize both problems and solutions.
The basic idea, the importance of being present and actually listening to what other people are saying is something we all know at some level, but we all have a hard time putting into practice. These authors, mother and daughter, show us very convincingly that listening and being genuinely curious are not merely a matter of good manners, they are vitally important skills for a happy and productive life. And they go farther than that, showing us how to apply curiosity to understanding oursel

Great advice for conflict resolution

"The Power of Curiosity," by the mother-daughter team of Kathy Taberner and Kirsten Taberner Siggins, is a landmark book in the area of conflict resolution and one from which we can all benefit. How does curiosity help in creating a positive outcome to our conversations, particularly those that arise in conflict situations? A quote from near the end of the book (p. 129) puts it best: "Without the Curiosity Skills, even the most respectful conversations can become telling, blaming, and shaming ––which leads to conflict. Curiosity allows you to have respectful conversations that don't lead to conflict: necessary conversations that have been too easy to ignore (address the elephant in the room); productive conversations that can become stressful and emotional in the moment; and challenging conversations where you are invested in the outcome."

This book presents a practical guide whereby we can hone our curiosity skills by being mindfully present, choosing how to listen, and asking curious open questions (rather than closed and judging questions). We are also given practical guidance for how we can use curiosity to better understand ourselves, such as by defining our values, identifying our wants and setting appropriate boundaries, and connecting our values to our emotions.

"The Power of Curiosity" is easy to read and can be gone through in a couple hours. However, putting its insights and advice into practice takes time. But as those who have tried it will testify, the results are worth it.

A must read for parents, leaders and anyone who wants to have improve their communication skills to have meaningful conversations. Kathy and Kirsten apply easy to use concepts to real life examples illustrating how powerful being curious can be in building positive relationships.
As a mother, wife, friend and emerging leader, the tools and exercises highlighted in the Power of Curiosity have provided me with a new way of approaching all situations in my life. The Power of Curiosity shows that being present, listening and asking questions are invaluable skills. I had many "aha" moments as I read the book and I found myself being pulled in from the the moment I started reading the introduction.
I have it on my shelf in my office and I recommend this book to anyone who wants to discover the importance of curiosity in discovering more about our relationships and the people who are in them.

dull, repetitive, tedious and of minimal educational value

This is the fourth semester I have been forced to teach from this book, and I dislike it more each time I use it. The entire Oral Comm series is mediocre at best, but level three is far and away the worst of them all. I hope they don't come out with new editions; that's the best chance I have of getting our school to switch to a different series soon.

Clinical Hematology is a small book which provides a surprising large amount of the most important and up to date information I am looking for. It is very helpful to have such pertinent and trust-worthy information at my fingertips. Epidemiology, clinical presentation, staging, prognostics, statistics and treatment presented in a well organized and concise manner. I reach for this volume (and its companion The Bethesda Handbook of Clinical Oncology) often.

poor kindle format

this is my first kindle book on professional subject. The book itself is good. However, the kindle format makes all tables and figures unreadable. So it's a waste of money. It will be great if amazon let's have a copy (may be pdf form) of unreadable tables and figures. Otherwise, kindle format is entirely not recommended. Buy the paper book.

My staff physician on heme/onc rotation loaned me this book. It spoke hematology in my language. Wish I would have had it back in med school--hematology wouldn't have been so intimidating. The section on hemoglobinopathies was especially helpful

A great over view of basic graphic design.

I really enjoyed looking at this book. Towards the beginning the information is great, but I especially liked the second half where many samples of work was provided. I believe the best way to learn is to continuously look at different designs from throughout the world, and many samples from Europe and Asia were provided.

The reason why the book didn't receive a 5 star rating was because it's not really a guide, but more of an overview. Don't expect to have practices from this book, it's mostly information and samples.

Overall, I really enjoyed it and would recommend buying it if you're starting out in the design industry!

Great book, but...

I love the Rockport series of graphic design books. Drool-worthy eye candy all, but a MAJOR bone to pick. What's with the teeny-tiny type? Is layout more important than content? Does style trump purpose? One needs a magnifying glass to read anything. What's the point, then of having text on the page to read? Or maybe it's not meant to be read, but oggled? I sadly returned my copy. Sadly, I hesitate to purchase any further Rockport publications.

Sweet and Concise

So what if it's not a workbook. The content more than makes up for the misname. This book is designed for people that are annoyed by those books filled with "content", that really only repeat the same thing over and over again. This book was written in a brief concise writing style and, to me, that is priceless. That title says layout workbook, but in reality it deals with more than just that. It deals with design process, which is very important for every designer, the overall mentality of what a designer should think like, and most of the fundamentals that all designers should come to learn in their long and hard design journey. Most people that write 5 star reviews only say things like it's a great book or truly wonderful, which I find very useless. Nonetheless, it's a great book, and I strongly recommend you get a copy as it will change the way you view design, especially if you starting out, or find yourself being an auto-didactic person. Thanks to this book I'll be starting my freelance carrier soon.
