Structuralist view of 'the fantastic'

Those interested in the structuralist criticism of the 1960s-70s will find the most joy here, with Todorov applying the rigorous structuralist stance to one of literature's most fascinating genres. His demolition of Northrop Frye's approach to 'genre' in Chapter 1 is still cogent after thirty years (and an amusing read in its own right), but it's Todorov's chapters on the 'themes of the fantastic', and his conclusion on its role in literature generally, which are most compelling. This is not, however, an easy read. As Robert Scholes notes in his foreword, "neither structuralism itself nor poetics in general is noted for its ability to charm readers." You don't say. Fortunately, Todorov uses many examples from well known fantastic texts - such as 'The Arabian Nights' and the works of Edgar Alan Poe - and also from lesser known French works which will have you rushing out to the antiquarian bookstore to hunt them down. You can accept or reject the structuralist position - but if nothing else, this book will open up a whole new world of 'fantastic' novels for you to enjoy.

What Todorov Means!

This book is a great achievement in criticism, but one should be warned that Todorov is not talking about elves and dragons when he uses the term "Fantastic." In this book Todorov advances his definition of the fantastic as a "hesitation" or inability to decide whether events in a narrative are natural or supernatural. Thus, the book deals more with straight supernatural fiction, than with what we usually think of as "fantasy" fiction. All in all, Todorov is insightful and his book is a great companion to anyone who enjoys French, English, or American supernatural fiction.

About the Author
From 1980 to 2013 Bob Yandian has been pastor of Grace Church, with a vibrant and strong congregation in his hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. For 33 years he hosted a weekly teaching radio broadcast called Precepts with Bob Yandian. Bob is widely acknowledged as one of the most knowledgeable Bible teachers of this generation. His practical insight and wisdom into the Word of God has helped countless people around the world to live successfully in every arena of the daily Christian life. In addition to the sale of over 200,000 books, CDs, and tapes world-wide, more than 22,000 books, tapes, and CDs have been donated to Bible schools, missionaries, prisoners, and people in need throughout the United States and around the world through Bob Yandian Ministries. This is a lovely little book for Poirot fans. It has an interesting insight into the creation of Poirot and Agatha Christie's ambivalent relationship with him.

I think it's great that although AC hated being "yoked to him for life" she eventually developed an affection for him, albeit reluctantly!

It is a short, delightful read with quintessential Poirot quotes from various novels. The layout and presentation is good, though do note the Kindle version displays on a double page.

The selection have been grouped according to themes for example those where he offers an opinion on himself ("One must have consideration for those less gifted than oneself"), on food and drink (""Mon Dieu! It is that in this country you treat the affairs gastronomic with a criminal indifference"), and on human nature ("Stupidity - it is the sin that is never forgiven and always punished").

Other themes include women, the English, symmetry and order, romance, life and death, detective work, the criminal mind, truth and lies, and Hastings.

Some of the quotes are funny, some are poignant, and some are profound, but all give the reader a fab insight/reminder about what makes Poirot such an amazing character.

About the Author
Sam & Sam Clark not only work together but are also husband and wife, and have both cooked at leading restaurants such as the Eagle gastro-pub and The River Café. After they were married, Sam and Sam bought a camper van and set off on a three-month journey through Spain, Morocco, and the Sahara. Bar snacks, basically.

I have eaten at Moro--one of the best meals I've ever had, and I really like the style of the restaurant food so I have the other three books as well and cook from them frequently. This book is not really useful to me. It is the book for the bar-restaurant next door to Moro and it is full of extremely salty, fatty, bar snacks. Its not that they don't look tasty. But they are designed for drunk people to get drunker and to enjoy and to spend a lot of money over, without really being all that good or something that I would serve. The owners of Moro admit that the seats at the bar are backless stools that are quite uncomfortable for "anyone over 50" because they just want a young, monied, drinking crowd that will eat and drink and then get out. The cookbook is designed for that. I'm happy to have it, but I think there are probably only two recipes in the whole thing that are worth considering "recipes" in the sense that you can't intuitively make it already or that are unique and interesting.
