Not a bad small spell book

Even though I've always been the type to write my own spells, I found this book to be quite interesting. It has several small, simple spells that seem worthwhile to try. The idea of trying to keep a copy machine, or any other piece of modern day equipment happy and running seems like a rather practicalspell to me.
I would recommend this book to people who are looking for practical, simple ways to do spellcasting. This isn't a book for newbies, but it's not a book that requires you have 20 years of spell casting under your belt.

Finally a Good Magickal Book that's got a sense of Humor

I thought that nearly every magickal writer in the world had lost the vision that humor is good "soul food" -- Telesco obviously has not. With spells like "it's my pantry and I'll scry if I want to" she brings modern reality, puns, and humor (all of which have strong emotional energy to support our magick) into the process, and reminds us that being playful is also spiritually healthy (within limits, of course). Good magick and good fun all wrapped into a great book! Worth so much more.

However, I was unaware that anything comparable was going on in Britain. When I finally got around to reading Vaihinger ("The Philosophy of As If"), and noticed that he mentioned Bentham (in the Preface to the English edition) as a precursor, - well, I was flabbergasted! I hadn't read any Bentham in decades, and I didn't recall anything at all like what Vaihinger was pursuing.

C. K. Ogden, who edited the English translation of Vaihinger's "Philosophy of As If", is also the editor here and he provides a usefully detailed 150 page introduction. The text of "The Theory of Fictions" was not published in Bentham's lifetime. Wherever there seemed to be some confusion in the text, Ogden consulted the MS. In the Introduction to the present work, Ogden asserts that the "chief defect of Vaihinger's monumental work was its failure to lay stress on the linguistic factor in the creation of fictions." He muses that this would be the next step, - except that the step had "already been taken by Bentham a century ago"!

At this point Ogden then quotes what is perhaps Bentham's most famous remark regarding fictions:
"To language, then -to language alone- it is that fictitious entities owe their existence; their impossible, yet indispensable existence."
Of course, all this illustrates nicely, avant la lettre, the difference between continental and anglo-american philosophy. The neo-Kantian (and, generally speaking, all continental philosophy) is ultimately concerned with the unknowable (for Kantians this was the Noumena), or at least the so far unknown, and thus metaphysics/ontology; while the anglo-american is more interested in the 'merely' practical (the doable and the undoable) and the linguistically 'sayable / unsayable'. To Bentham, the idolator of utility, the examination of fictitious entities is an extremely practical affair having myriad ramifications for our understanding of law, politics and science.

Now, this book is decidedly not your great-grandfather's (or the academic) Jeremy Bentham. It throws an entirely new light on the entire Utilitarian gambit. This book was first published in 1932. I have the 1959 paperback edition before me. Ogden denies that Bentham's contemporaries and commentators ever really understood him.
"Since Bentham himself so clearly indicates the importance which he attached to the Theory of Fictions as an Instrument, it is all the more surprising that his biographers, interpreters, and critics have almost all been content to dismiss it with a contemptuous reference."
(Ogden here excludes only Sir Leslie Stephen, who "in his account of Bentham in 'The English Utilitarians', provides a detached and intelligible summary.")

Again, this is not the Bentham one generally encounters in those 'History of Philosophy' survey courses. But why? Well, the first thing to note is that this text, 'The Theory of Fictions', was not given this form by Bentham. Rather, it was culled from several of the later manuscripts. In his manuscripts Bentham, it seems, was in the habit of "starting afresh whenever he resumed the consideration of any subject from a different angle" so there is a great deal of repetition in these notes. Of course, editing these notes was very difficult. And his editors and collaborators worked on what they thought important. But unfortunately "the material on Linguistic Psychology occupied a peculiar position, and its importance was not obvious to his younger collaborators."

And so it was left to Ogden, a century later, to do the work necessary to bring this material to the world. Whether you merely wish to understand the presuppositions of utilitarianism, or you have an interest (as I do) in the antecedents of our horrid postmodernity, - you must read Bentham on fictitious entities and their utility cum necessity! Also, do have a look at Vaihinger's "The Philosophy of As If" to hear the continental side of the argument for the necessity of fictions.

I should close with a note of warning; I found Bentham stylistically a very difficult read. I give four stars due to style. Of course, this could be because these remarks of Bentham's were culled from manuscripts. However, I think it has something to do with the oratorical traditions of the 1700's and 1800's. At times it seems as if the verbal pyrotechnics that are aimed at spellbinding an uneducated mob are routinely used in all forms of writing too. (I also find Carlyle, at times, quite unreadable.) However, the long introduction by Ogden was very readable. The introduction and Benthams text are almost of equal length.

If one is interested in the notion of 'necessary fictions' I would recommend the following books at minimum:

Opus Postumum, Immanuel Kant (Vaihinger underlines the relevance of this unfinished book to his work. Nietzsche also saw it. Continental Philosophy.)
Bentham's Theory of Fictions, Charles K. Ogden (The book I am here reviewing. Anglo-American Philosophy.)
The History of Materialism and Criticism of its Present Importance, Friedrich Albert Lange (Nietsche read the still untranslated first edition of this book. Continental. But the second edition was translated by Bertrand Russell so it travels well.)
Philosophy and Truth: Selections from Nietzsche's Notebooks of the Early 1870s, Friedrich Nietzsche (Radical Neo-Kantianism. Continental.)
The Philosophy of As if, H. Vaihinger (Continental.)

About the Author
Farahnaz Ispahani has been a leading voice for women and religious minorities in Pakistan for the past twenty-five years, first as a journalist, then as a member of Pakistan's National Assembly, and most recently as a scholar based in the United States. An advocate of Pakistan's return to democracy during the military regime of Pervez Musharraf, she served as a spokesperson and international media coordinator for the Pakistan People's Party, working alongside the late Benazir Bhutto. During her tenure in parliament (2008-2012), she was a member of the Foreign Affairs and Human Rights Committees and of the Women's Parliamentary Caucus. In 2013-2014, she served as a Public Policy Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. In 2012, she was listed among Foreign Policy magazine's Top 100 Global Thinkers, as well as Newsweek Pakistan's Top 100 Women Who Matter.

Excellent, rigorous read on human rights & Pakistani society

This book is a must-read for South Asia watchers and for anyone who wants to understand the crucial, often hushed situation of minorities in Pakistani society. Ms. Ispahani offers a brave, in-depth take on this controversial subject, backed up by rigorous research and treated with the care of a passionate defender of human rights. Highly recommend.

Mrs. Ispahani's Purifying the Land of the Pure is a refreshing new addition to what is already a large set of literature on Pakistan. Although many authors have briefly discussed the plight of religious minorities in Pakistan, Ispahani dedicates a whole book on the subject to all minorities, not just Muslims or Christians. Passionately written, Ispahani's book is a must read for all those interested in Pakistan and human rights.

Just read this excellent book on Pakistan. Great historical background on how the problem facing religious minorities started. Author spends a lot of time providing great details and talks about all religious minorities: Ahmadi, Shia, Hindus, Christians and Sikhs.

About the Author
Yue-Ling Wong is the author of Digital Media Primer and The Art of Digital Media. She holds a joint faculty position in the Computer Science and Art Departments at Wake Forest University as Lecturer in Digital Media. She has taught the Digital Media course of Computer Science Department, designed the multimedia labs for Computer Science 101 (a course for non-computer science majors), team-taught Art Department's Digital Art I, II and III, and taught courses in 3-D Modeling and Animation, and Advanced Web Programming.  She is also designing and teaching a new introductory computer programming course using the visual approaches of interactive multimedia programming, game programming, and graphic animation.  Dr. Wong has ten years of experience in developing interactive multimedia instructional material for both science and non-science disciplines. Her educational software package entitled Atomic Orbitals CD (published in 1997 by Jones and Bartlett Publishers) was a finalist of the NewMedia magazine INVISION '97 award in the educational category. She earned her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin in 1992.

I like this digital media textbook

I like this digital media textbook. It is fun to read and learn about the various topics. My only wish for improvement is that it went into greater detail about software usage that I encounter. However, that would probably be a completely different textbook.

Hmmm...

I am 27 and reading this series has been great but this one did not work for me. I am not into cowboys or ranchers or previous in love heroes or heroines and they are older than me. The thought of a 50 year old man being a hero is not sexy to me. He was really sweet but when I was trying to picture him, all I saw was the man on the cover of the book. That is not how the hero looks. The hero has thick, full blonde hair and the man on the cover is old looking to me. I could not get that image out of my head when I was reading. Plus the cover art makes Fin look almost 50 as well. It was just not for me and I hate to say it but this is the one I liked least out of all the books in this series. They are cute together but not my style for a romance couple.

The story line was good. The writer omitted the writer the epilogue. This would have ended the story. Ore effectively for the readers and there were typos.
