Well Worth Every Penny for PM&R Board Review!

I did not take the written exam in the typical manner secondary to childbearing and scheduling delays. Needless to say, my clinical exposure to many of the tested areas was limited since completion of residency. Consequently, I found it necessary to review and study prior to the exam. I found this book helpful in structuring my study time. It's subject contect was also complete. If there was an area in which the review book did not make since to me, I merely supplemented with standard tests. Otherwise, the review book was a sufficient resource for preparation. I would highly recommend it as I believe that I partly owe my passing score to the authors!

Does job for PMR Boards

The previous two reviewers gave this book both stars. However, as a senior PM&R resident about to finish my residency I can tell you that this book is one of the most popular board review books being used by U.S. residents.

Obviously popularity does not win every contest, however, what this book does do is concisely organize the admittedly vast field and bring out frequently asked questions both from the standpoint of clinical care as well as board type questions which are totally different.

The book is organized into an outline format, with "high yield" points labeled with symbols next to them. All major physiatric topics are covered, some to a lesser degree than others. However, the assumption is that since this is a Board Review, those subjects which carry less weight in terms of questions have less pages devoted to them.

If you are looking for a Board review, I believe this book is currently a good tool to use. The Braddom textbook is too wieldy for the purpose of board studying and one has to filter through too many questions; PM&R Secrets does contain good material however much of it is not board specific and is written in a way that does not lend itself to studying.

The book is a bit rough around the edges. Its outline style makes it concise but at the same time a bit jumpy. As a previous reviewer pointed out it may have a few slightly outdated points but again, for *Board Purposes*, this field has not changed enough to make them drastic points of conflict.

ALL YOU SHOULD NEED FOR PMR RECERTIFICATION

i've been in private practice for 10years, but have been out of PMR practice for about 8 years. i used this text exclusively for the recertification boards and passed with flying colors.

if your primary goal is to pass the recertification board, this is ALL YOU NEED.

secondarily, i would think it is a nice quick referrence for everyday pmr topics.

This book prepares you by opening up your mind from the conditioning of the Norm into the exceptional.

Beware of James Ray's Loose Translations of Spirituality

James Ray says: "The Latin root of the word "desire" loosely translates to de-sire, meaning 'of the father'. Your desire is your Higher Self wanting to manifest. It's your Higher Power wanting to work with and through you. God wants all of your goals and dreams to be humanly impossible. Do you know why? Because that way He is certain to be part of their achievement." - Million Dollar Mindset

A quick search will reveal that the word "desire" ACTUALLY comes right from the Latin verb "desidare" which is pretty straight forward. That verb comes from the phrase "de sidus/sideris" meaning "of the stars". The root here is sidus/sideris--star, constellation. The "sire" Ray is referring to actually comes from an old French word that forms the origins of "monsieur." That came from the Latin "senex," the declarative form of which is "senior." The sense of fatherhood wasn't attached to the word "sire" until the 13th century, long after Latin-speakers had anything to do with it.

This is just one example of Ray's penchant for loosely translating things. Generally, there's no harm in a loose translation. Sometimes, however, loose translations can be misleading, or can represent a manipulation of truth and sometimes these can be extremely dangerous. For example, James Ray's loose translation of a Native American sweat lodge ritual left three people dead in October 2009.
