a richly suggestive reading of modern art and its roots

I was moved to write this review mostly because the only other review of this wonderful book so far is a misleading two-star from someone who got a bad copy. This is definitely a five-star study of modern art, a sweeping but vividly detailed take on work from the late 18th century through the early 1960s. Robert Rosenblum makes it explicit from the start: he thinks we've been missing a vast and important aspect of the art of recent centuries by seeing it only through the window of "Paris," that is, the pictorial and formal concerns that run from Manet through the Impressionists and Cezanne, and Matisse, Picasso, and the surrealists. You can draw that line and come out at the abstract expressionism of New York as it blossomed in the late 1940s and 1950s, but Rosenblum in this book makes a strong and articulate case for a different lineage for many of those same New York artists, one that traces back to the sublime, spirit-haunted landscapes of Casper David Friedrich and J.M.W. Turner and is infused throughout with the passionate Romantic quest for glimpses of the divine in nature and in humans. It is an exhilarating consideration of various artists whose deepest concern was to approach the sacred through their painting in a time of general weakening of the sense that the Christian legacy was a viable tradition. You may agree or disagree with many of the fine points, and even find the overall thesis not to your taste, but this is a book that will freshen your vision, awaken you to neglected artists and works, and change and enrich the way you look at these artists along the way. The exhuming of the semi-abstract works of the neglected American painter Augustus Vincent Tack is practically worth the price of the book by itself. Be advised though, that in the paperback version I have, all of the (generously many) reproductions are relatively small and in black and white, and serve mainly as suggestions and motivation to seek out and study real quality reproductions and even, God willing, the works themselves in all their glory. This is not a coffee table book, it is a study meant to send you back to these works with new eyes, and I believe Rosenblum succeeds in this wonderfully.

I was so anxious to read this book after hearing a wonderful review of it, but the copy I received was dirty and old. I don't care to even touch it, yet curl up with it on a clold evening. I need to look for a better quality copy.

A must for beginners and First time Yukata owners

The book is short and descriptive. It gives the basics of wearing casual kimono or yukata including some minute details that will ensure newbies looking to put on yukata look neat and nice. It also includes step by step photos corresponding to the instructions. As for kimono, the book is good for beginners who wish to wear a casual kimono with hanhaba obi to a casual event. It does not however teach the basic taiko musubi needed to wear kimono seriously. I recommend this book for absolute beginners who just want to wear a yukata correctly. I however do not recommend it for those who know the basics and wish to seriously learn how to wear kimono neatly. 4 stars as a great e-book for yukata newbies and cheap price.

The translation is rough, but you can still get a pretty good idea of what she is trying to say. The book has nice step by step illustrations of how to wear a yukata, hanhaba obi, juban and kimono. This e-book gives women chance to get the basics of how to wear a yukata without having to buy an expensive book from Japan. The author's stories about Japan are charming, but the choppy translation makes it hard to read. As someone who collect English kimono books, it is the most affordable option out there for beginners, but if you already know the basics save up for a Japanese book.

only truly useful for absolute newbies but good for 1USD on kindle

I was looking for a book tutorial on tips for everyday wear or little cheats to make wearing things easier and although this book does have a couple of those, there is not that much info on dressing tips. Good point: it talks about underwear which not many books do and gives you some alternatives such as showing you some diy accesories. It covers the basic obi knots with good pictures and how to put on stuff. There is some info about the author and her everyday life. I wouldn't advise buying it if you already know what you are doing wearing kimono and yukata unless you want a glimpse of what her life is like. It is nice though to see kimono outside the unreachable-by-mortals context it is usually put in, and I like that she sees it like something that can be incorporated into everyday life. The translation is not the best but the book is very understandable when you consider all the pictures. Good for the price.

Watery water

There is no "how" in this book, there is no detailed guidance, there is no guidance at all. First I thought that it might get 3 stars just for being an encyclopedia for dummies with no interrelation between entities. No, it's not even that.

Here is one phrase you pay for buying this book, it's located on page 71: "[cognitive computing] is analogous to the way a child learns about the world through observation, experience, and perhaps instruction". There is nothing before that phrase in the book, nothing (new) after. There is no "how" besides a lot of hand weaving, speculations, stating obvious facts (sometimes), and a LOT of water in between. A lot. Just plain water, no information at all.

Maybe not surprisingly, the authors wrote more than 5 books together in the "For Dummies" series. I would argue that even book for a "dummy" have to have some knowledge synthesis, some information, and most of them do.

This book is just a fake. A rip off?

A very good read on how Cognitive Computing is changing markets and industries

Augmenting human problem solving skills with learning machines will change markets and industries on the scale that we last saw with the Internet over 20 years ago. Judy, Marcia and Adrian do a great job of explaining, in practical terms, the elements of Cognitive Computing and why Cognitive systems will fulfill the promise of driving business transformation and actionable insights from Big Data. One of the top two reads if you are new to this space or trying to understand how to deepen your company's understanding and application of this massively disruptive capability. Given the high failure rate of current Big Data projects (over 55% by some accounts), this is a very timely release.

Humor helps make the tough discussions more palatable...

I'm not sure that the snarky prose is everyone's cup of tea, but Ron's humorous take on all things financial services and marketing belies a very clever approach to tackling the hard issues this industry faces. His humor allows us to have the difficult discussions about the real reform and change that we need, without attacking the industry no holes barred. We need more honest appraisal of the challenges facing this business, and Ron's Snarketing 2.0 does this in a way that is easy to read, and yet substantial and detailed. You can really feel his experience as a researcher/analyst here too as he draws on significant data and insights to make points that should otherwise be fairly obvious.

Don't let the 'snarky' humor fool you - Ron's got some serious points to make and they bare your attention.

Lives up to it's title...2.0

Ron definitely does snarky. It's a great communication vehicle for some really great points.

Finally, someone to take on the trend of "social makes rich" marketing fluff that's being put out there these days. Ron takes on the sacred cows of the "new media marketing" crowd and does it not just with humor, but with fact. His "take it to its logical conclusion" approach shows the flaws in a lot of the "new" conventional marketing wisdom.

I would offer two humble critiques.

1. I have a statistical bone to pick with the chapter on Failure. Although I agree there is a significant "celebration of failure" in current culture, I doubt it is as bad in corporate cultures as would be indicated by the chapter. And as for the statistics, Ron uses the "coin flip" analogy to show that multiple failures do not increase the odds of a success - just as 10 flips of heads don't make a tails more likely. But that assumes the flips are independent events - no correlation between the trials - no learning from one flip to the next. And it is that exact point that the "no fear of failure" folks are making. If in fact, with each flip of heads a tails becomes more likely because of the learning, then, statistically, it's true, with each head, a tail becomes more probable.

2. Ron rips to shreds the myths of "making it" in social media by simply showing up. However, I really wished I could have gotten some advice about the "right" way, in Ron's opinion, of leveraging the medium. I felt it was challenging, but oftentimes more negative. It removes all the conventional wisdom, but doesn't replace it with anything else. Maybe that's his next book... [hint, hint].

Bottom Line: [sorry, Ron, had to do it] Great first step in seeing the social media sphere in the correct light and knowing what not to do. We are just left asking, "what then?"

A fun romp through modern marketing myths and missteps

Well, Mr. Shevlin, my thanks for writing this book. Okay, so I went cheap and bought the Kindle version. And yeah, call me double-cheap because I'm looking for a place on your Quantipulation list. But the volume had me engaged from electronic cover to cover, snickering more than a few times, and I now feel prepared to dispel many of the more pernicious marketing myths circulating inside my company and around my industry. There's little here about stupid social media ROI tricks or raging marketing diseases that I haven't been preaching myself -- but, as they say, a prophet has no honor in his own country. It's useful having the published words of a respected pundit at my side when telling my C-level leadership that too many social media and marketing "emperors" are wearing no clothes. I'm confident that others will find the same. Sure, I could have dropped $5.95 on a ticket for a Saturday matinee viewing of The Thing. But I was very pleased, and arguably far more entertained, having invested the cash and a couple hours with Snarketing Two Dot Oh.

About the Author
John G. Lambert joined the US Naval Reserve and served aboard the (Essex Class) aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard, CVA-31, in 1965-1966 on a West-Pac for 9 months, as an Avionics Technician in VAW-11.

With keen interest in the sea, he surfed on the west coast, and later became an advanced scuba diver. Hobbies were diversified from boating to water skiing, snow skiing and photography.

He learned to fly in 1970, then purchased plans, and built his own plane, a Burt Rutan designed VariEze. He raced it, and flew it from coast-to-coast and border-to-border. A member of the EAA, he headed up a experimental aircraft builders group in San Diego for a number of years, and became both active with (and historian of) an experimental aircraft racing group.

With his background in the navy, and aviation, he wrote a book on the history of the WWII aircraft carrier USS Independence, CVL-22, at the request of the ship's Reunion Group.

The book has involved approx. 9 years of research, with trips across the nation to places including NARA - The National Archives in College Park MD, and NARA San Bruno CA, the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola, Tailhook Association in San Diego, to name a few. First released in 2011, with file changes made since for inclusion of additional historical data and photos.

John was invited to join Dr. James Delgado on the joint NOAA / Navy / Boeing / Coda Octopus mission to obtain 3D side scan sonar images of the USS Independence on the bottom of the Pacific off Half Moon Bay California in 2015.

A High School Reunion book was published in 2013 for his reunion group.

As a historian for a devoted group of pilots racing their experimental airplanes, a new book has been published about: RACE (Rutan And Composites Enthusiasts) Canard Air Racing 1983 - 2005.

An excellent narative about the ship and it's men

I have been anticipating the book ever since John Lambert contacted me about using my brother's diary. The book is everything I hoped it would be. It is filled with details about the ship and the struggles of the men to fight her. I especially appreciate the way that John Lambert has worked in the story of the enlisted men who kept the ship going and the planes flying. The story of CVL 22 is an untold story until now. It is my hope that the men who sailed and fought her as well as their families will be able to enjoy the story and that many others will learn to appreciate their sacrifice. The book is well written and is difficult to put down.

Extraordinary "war" book! Well-researched.

I know the author, John Lambert, and can attest to the incredible amount of research that went into bringing this fine work to publication. Over four years of intense research, including travelling from coast to coast, gathering material and interviewing many of the surviving pilots, officers and seamen who fought from the deck of this mighty ship.

Anyone interested in the War in the Pacific will love this book. And, if you have an interest in the "Mighty I" in particular, you'll be doubly rewarded. I doubt there's a more thorough, well-written, reference work anywhere. It is truly a tribute to those who served but did not return.

The War Record of USS INDEPENDENCE!

Wow and Double Wow! There are books and then there are labors of love. John Lambert's USS INDEPENDENCE CVL-22 clearly fits in the later category. Sub-titled A WAR DIARY OF THE NATION'S FIRST DEDICATED NIGHT CARRIER, It is one of the most detailed aircraft carrier histories I've ever come across...and a wonderful tribute to the brave men who served on and flew from the 'Mighty I.'

Clocking in at 834(!) pages, Lambert's book supplies a day-to-day chronicle of CVL-22's life and times. INDEPENDENCE started life as the light cruiser AMSTERDAM but was then converted to a light carrier. CVL-22 subsequently saw combat in 1943, '44 and '45, deploying various Air Groups. At war's end, it ferried servicemen home as part of the 'Magic Carpet' operation. It was utilized as a test vessel at the July 1946 Bikini Atoll A-bomb tests and was later expended as a target for Navy weapons in 1951. CVL-22 earned eight battle stars for its Pacific service.

The book interweaves deck logs, ships' logs, personal diaries and first-person reminiscences to tell INDEPENDENCE'S story. Along with providing a thorough accounting of CVL-22's career, Lambert's book is bursting with hundreds of photographs, diagrams and maps that showcase every aspect of its life - construction, crew, air groups, battle scenes, etc.

USS INDEPENDENCE CVL-22 sets the standard for carrier histories. Thorough, readable and well-illustrated, Lambert's book is a compelling account of one carrier's war in the Pacific. Highly recommended.
