excellent reference
By Gregory A. Hillis
This is an excellent resource for students of jazz piano who want ready access to modern sounding chord voicings in all 12 keys. Andy LaVerne's books all have the best sophisticated chord voicings among the various jazz piano books out there. Going through any of his books is like a masterclass in jazz harmony. The virtue of this book is that it offers the student a choice of chords and standard patterns and progressions that all sound great and can be applied in virtually any standard jazz tune. The two defects with this particular book, in my opinion, are (1) its very small size -- it's the size of a cell phone!, and (2) the unfortunate omission of II-V7-I progressions in major keys in which the dominant chord is harmonically altered rather than mere diatonic harmony. There are, however, good patterns that use altered tones in the harmonic minor keys. All in all, a worthwhile volume for students of jazz piano and harmony.

Aphorisms are often derided as trivial, yet most people rule their lives with five or six of them. This collection contains five or six hundred, some of which you wouldn't want to rule your life with.

"The Rochefoucauld of the Twitter generation has arrived. Aaron Haspel's crisp, curt, cold-eyed aphorisms pack the maximum amount of truth into the minimum amount of space — and do it with elegance and wit." —Terry Teachout, drama critic, The Wall Street Journal

"Aaron Haspel is good, very good." —Nassim Nicholas Taleb, author of Antifragile and The Black Swan

"My favorite aphorist of the 21st century." —Colin Marshall, Boing Boing

"Extremely good...wry, wise rules." —James Geary, author of The World in a Phrase and editor of Geary's Guide to the World's Great Aphorists

Original aphorisms so good that you'll think they're from from some dead wise man
By Cliff Styles
I was lucky enough to encounter Aaron Haspel’s writing early in his career as an aphorist, and he opened my attention to a Pandora’s box-car of wit and bludgeon; this book is the first collection from years of his own work, the only quoted material is an occasional one-liner initiating a chapter.

From my yet insufficient travels among the aphorists, it seems to me that an average aphorist will gently shake or pleasantly confirm your comfy self-delusions, a good aphorist will upset your equilibrium with some sharp exposition from a worldview probably truer than your own, but a great aphorist will write pointed and inescapable truths as many personas in many arenas and often slip in a disturbing uncertainty alongside some fresh and painful truth.

Aaron Haspel is with the greats.

‘Examples!?!’, I hear you cry? Fine, here you go, pilgrim.

At one time or another, Mr Haspel sounds like:

Eric Hoffer writing about the world from the docks - “One of truth’s greatest enemies is collegiality”; “Anything can be conjured into existence by empowering a committee to suppress it”;

Rodney Dangerfield delivering a one liner - “An electronic device that tracked your location at all times used to be a condition of parole”;

A ruthless agony aunt telling you to buck up and face the music - “It is impossible to recognize your betters until you acknowledge that they exist”;

A crusader against self-deception - “To hate something properly you must have liked it once”; “We are such accomplished liars because we get so much practice on ourselves”;

A modern zen master - “Taxes, regarded as the price of indifference, are a bargain”;

Diogenes delivering smack - “Every logical fallacy is also a valid heuristic”;

Sometimes even a surprising and friendly uncle - “You attenuate your strengths by too assiduously correcting your defects”;

and, finally, Cassandra warning of doom - the last item in the book will give you a chill, as will many others, but you’ll have to buy the book to read it, I’m not giving it away. The above are not even his best, by the way, read the book to discover them.

Among many uses, you can exploit this book as a self-help manual. How? By fighting with Haspel, or if you insist, agreeing with him. One seduction an apt aphorism incites is that gratifyingly instantaneous Yes!! or No!!!, but the real profit is from a slow hunt for examples on your own, and from the dawning revelation of the Big Question that is slipped in alongside the seemingly self-evident. So fight with Haspel, he’ll often win or at least give you a good pummeling, but keep in mind this excellent Haspel admonition: “There are few experiences as salutary as losing an argument, but only if you notice”.

This book does the opposite of the modern publishing so given to inflating 5 cent magazine articles into 25 buck hardcovers: Haspel condenses his lifelong study and rumination into point and pith, and after gulping in a dozen Haspelisms, you’ll be stuffed to the intellectual gills, and need a lie-down to digest them, or a rant and google against his ‘obvious’ errors, or a quiet bar in which to mutter and stew in your chagrin.

The downside is that Haspel will make you less receptive to the pleasant bloviations that feed anodyne distraction to your head, from others or from yourself, while the upside will be that he’ll provide you with a sharp memory stick with which to puncture those bloviations when you tire of them. Haspel’s shorter, and better, version: “We remember what we believe, and believe what we remember.”. You’ll quote him from memory, not always exactly but still aptly, as I have.

Oh yes, and he’ll amuse you, though it’s amusement with a frisson of anxiety from suspecting that your soul is painted on his bullseye. He has, by the way, no inhibition or prohibition against pinning himself on that target.

The book’s a steal at this price, so pay the pittance and take a kiss from the abyss; you’ll laugh, you’ll cringe, you’ll put yourself ahead of the crowd, you’ll wise up, you’ll improve your cocktail conversation, and you’ll be a better man. How many writers have ever done as much for you?

Sticks and Stones may Break your Bones, but Haspel Draws Blood.
By John Faithful Hamer
In a letter to a friend, Nietzsche maintained that the only readers who could really claim to have understood his Zarathustra (1891) were those who were, at times, profoundly wounded by it. I couldn’t help but think of this remark as I read Everything (2015). Although this book is quite short and extraordinarily clear, it’s not an easy read. Far from it actually. Haspel says that he asks but “one thing of literature: that it draw blood.” And he delivers on this score, again and again, with aphorisms like the following: (i) “Whatever you think you like — are you sure you like it? Or do you like being the sort of person who likes it?” (ii) “Whatever you have done, you are the sort of person who would do that.” (iii) “It never seems to occur to the teacher who complains of inattentive students that he may not be worth attending to.” (iv) “If you want to destroy your marriage talk about it.”

But these are only some of the most obviously challenging aphorisms contained in this volume. The more insidious ones are like time-bombs or retroviruses: I rarely “get” them the first time I read them. Don’t even necessarily get them when I’m reading them. Instead, something happens or someone says something, days or even weeks later, and a bell goes off in my head and I think “a-ha”—that’s what he meant! For instance, this aphorism (which I posted the other day on Facebook) is loved at first for almost all of the wrong reasons: “If it has never crossed your mind that you might be stupid, you are.” People who’ve been (like me), at times, painfully aware of their inadequacy, read this and feel smart. Until, that is, they realize, a few days or weeks later, that although failing the aphorism’s test proves that you’re stupid, passing it doesn’t prove that you’re smart. A week or two later, however, it gets worse: the self-congratulatory glow loses all of what’s left of its luster when you realize that you can be stupid and know you’re stupid.

Some of Haspel’s aphorisms are laugh-out-loud funny, such as: (i) “Passion, n. An overwhelming urge to spend your life at something you don’t do especially well.” (ii) “The ideal work environment for a writer is jail.” (iii) “Blaming an actor for being a narcissist is like blaming a tiger for being a carnivore.” (iv) It is when we recognize our hopeless inadequacy at everything else that we discover our vocation.” And some of them are straightforwardly brilliant, such as this one, which is, to my mind, the best summary of the Socratic way of life I have ever read: “A grudging willingness to admit error does not suffice; you have to cultivate a taste for it.”

Still, if you’re looking for the kind of writer beloved of avid readers of The New Yorker—the kind who knows how to make his educated liberal audience feel superior to all of those yahoos in the sticks who hunt, pray, vote Republican, and believe in weird stuff—don’t buy this book. Seriously, don’t. Because you’ll hate it. Haspel holds up a mirror, and, trust me, you’re not going to like everything you see. I know I didn’t. If Haspel has an overarching message that he wants to impart it’s that we’re not exempt from the follies of our day, even (and perhaps especially) when we think we are: “We are more like our contemporaries than we imagine, and less like our ancestors.”

I read a great deal (probably more than I should), and I’ve been a great lover of the aphoristic genre for over twenty years. Yet never before have I encountered so many aphorisms written by a contemporary of such a high quality: Haspel is in a league of his own. At his best, Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s aphorisms in The Bed of Procrustes (2010) rival those of Epicurus (e.g., “Love without sacrifice is like theft” is something I wish I had written). But my fellow Canadian, George Murray, probably deserves the prize for second place. His most recent collection of aphorisms, Glimpse (2010), is often outstanding (e.g., “Rubble becomes ruin when the tourists arrive”). Even so, the collection is scandalously uneven, and it really doesn’t hold a candle to Everything. To wit: Aaron Haspel is the greatest master of the aphoristic form writing in English today. It’s always hard to know which books will stand the test of time, which books will be read 300 years from now. But if I was a betting man, I’d bet on Everything.

More than very good.

using one of his own aphorism about art, I would say It is one of those rare pieces of writing that reads us and finds us wanting.

About the Author
Beattie was a struggling single parent of two children and freelance author and journalist cranking out stories for a small-town daily newspaper in 1986 when she came up with a book idea. She wanted to write a book about what happens to people when they love someone who is addicted to alcohol and other drugs. Twenty publishers turned down Beattie's book proposal. Hazelden, however, a treatment center and recovery publisher based in Minnesota, saw a need for the book. The publisher understood how families of alcoholics suffer and believed Beattie's book idea would help people. Beattie marched to the welfare department, asked for enough financial help to make it through the three months it would take her to write the book, then locked herself in a basement office and cranked out Codependent No More. Codependent No More has now sold over 4 million copies. Beattie has since written nine more books, five for major publishing houses. She relocated from Minnesota to California, and she has long-since paid back the welfare department. Beattie has appeared in the pages of Newsweek and People and has been a regular guest on Geraldo and Oprah.

This is a book of essays, meditations, and activities—one for each day of the year. You can use it to begin your year on January 1. Or you can begin your year on your birthday, the day some people believe begins their personal new year. It's a companion book to the original Language of Letting Go (not a replacement or updated edition) and can be used by itself or in conjunction with that book. You can roll along with your life and use the book to address issues that arise. Or you can use this book as a workbook—or "playbook"—to address specific areas and issues you'd like to focus on in the upcoming year, such as releasing an outdated relationship or behavior, achieving cherished goals, or moving to the next level in work, in love, or in life.

The essay that falls on the first day of each month explores the theme for the month. Each monthly topic is a major component in the process of letting go. You will also notice that skydiving, my new passion, has turned out to be a beautiful metaphor for the art of letting go and letting God do for us what we can't do for ourselves.

I use God as the predominant word for references to God, Higher Power, Jehovah, or Allah. I may use He or She as the pronoun for God, depending on my mood. I mean no harm, nor is it my intention to discriminate or offend. Substitute whatever word pleases you to describe your idea of God.

The prayers and ideas are meant as suggestions.

May God bless you, your family, friends, and loved ones in this year to come. And may you guide yourself joyfully through the journey you choose, or have been called, to take.

January 1                                                        Trust that good will come

It was a slow, boring January day at the Blue Sky Lodge. We had just moved in. The house was a mess. Construction hadn't begun yet. All we had was a plan, and a dream. It was too cold and rainy to skydive or even be outdoors. There wasn't any furniture yet. We were lying around on the floor.

I don't know who got the idea first, him or me. But we both picked up Magic Markers about the same time. Then we started drawing on the wall.

"What do you want to happen in your life?" I asked. He drew pictures of seaplanes, and mountains, and boats leaving the shore. One picture was a video-camera man, jumping out of a plane. "I want adventure," he said.

I drew pictures of a woman tromping around the world. She went to war-torn countries, then sat on a fence and watched. She visited the mountains and the oceans and many exciting places. Then I drew a heart around the entire picture, and she sat there in the middle of all the experiences on a big stack of books.

"I want stories," I said, "ones with a lot of heart."

Across the entire picture, in big letters, he wrote the word "Woohoo."

As an afterthought, I drew a woman sky diver who had just jumped out of the plane. She was frightened and grimacing. Next to her I wrote the words "Just relax."

On the bottom of the wall I wrote, "The future is only limited by what we can see now." He grabbed a marker, crossed out "only," and changed it to "never."

"There," he said, "it's done."

Eventually, the house got cleaned up and the construction finished. Furniture arrived. And yellow paint covered the pictures on the wall. We didn't think much about that wall until months later. Sometimes slowly, sometimes quickly, and sometimes in ways we'd least expect, each of the pictures we'd drawn on that wall began to materialize and manifest.

"It's a magic wall," I said.

Even if you can't imagine what's coming next, relax. The good pictures are still there. The wall will soon become covered with the story of your life. Thank God, the future is never limited by what we can see right now.

The wall isn't magic.

The magic is in us and what we believe.

Before we start speaking the language of letting go, we need to understand what a powerful behavior letting go and letting God really is.

God, help me do my part. Then help me let go, and let you do yours.

Activity: Meditate for a moment on the year ahead. Make a list of things you'd like to see happen, attributes you'd like to gain, things you'd like to get and do, changes you'd like to occur. You don't have to limit the list to this year. What do you want to happen in your life? Make a list of places you'd like to visit and things you'd like to see. Leave room for the unexpected, the unintended. But make room for the possibility of what you'd like, too—your intentions, wishes, dreams, hopes, and goals. Also, list what you're ready to let go of, too—things, people, attitudes, and behaviors you'd like to release. If anything were possible, anything at all, what are the possibilities you'd like to experience and see?

January 2                                                                                Doing my part

The surest way to become Tense, Awkward, and Confused is to develop a mind that tries too hard—one that thinks too much.
—Benjamin Hoff, The Tao of Pooh

The universe will help us, but we need to do our part as well. Here's an acronym, My Part, to help you remember what it means to do that.

Manifest
Your

Power
Accept
Relax
Trust

Too often, we tell ourselves the only way to get from point A to point B—or Z—is to tense up, obsess a little (or a lot), and live in fear and anxiety until what we want takes place.

That isn't the path to success. It's the path to fear and anxiety.

Accept. Relax. Breathe. Let go. Trust yourself, God, and the universe to manifest the best possible destiny when the time is right for you.

God, help me make the journey from fear and control to letting go and stepping into my true power.

January 3                                                                    Bring your ideals to life

There is a Zen story about two monks walking down a street after a heavy rain. Arriving at a corner, they came upon a beautiful girl in fine clothing unable to cross the muddy street without getting filthy.

"Here, I'll help you," said one monk. Lifting her in his arms, he carried her to the other side. The two monks walked in silence for a long time.

"We've sworn a vow of celibacy and are not supposed to go near women. It's dangerous," the second monk said to the first. "Why did you do that?"

"I left the girl back at the corner," the first monk said. "Are you still carrying her?"

Sometimes, we may find ourselves in a situation where our ideals conflict. Being kind and loving to another person may conflict with our value of being committed and loving toward ourselves.

When one ideal imposes on another, then use your judgment. Do the right thing by others. Do the right thing by yourself, too. Then let the incident pass and move on.

For the monks in our story, right action usually meant not having contact with women. However, when encountering a stranded person on the road, right action became helping others. Ideals remain. Right thought, right action, right speech—but the path to those ideals may twist and turn throughout life. Be sensitive and aware that you are following an ideal and not a rigid belief.

God, help me learn when it's time to let go.

Activity: In an earlier activity, we explored our goals and dreams list. Now, let's determine the ethics and ideals we want to live by, the code of conduct we want to follow. What's of foremost importance to you, whether or not your dreams come true and you achieve your goals? Examples of ideals may be staying clean and sober, honoring your commitments to others, and honoring your commitment to yourself. Many people choose additional spiritual values, such as compassion, honesty, tolerance. Some people choose to live by an ideal they call "Christ Consciousness," some "Buddha Consciousness," some the "Twelve Steps," and some the "Ten Commandments." List your ideals, and put that list with your goals. Let these ideals be a light that guides your path and allows you to live in harmony with others and yourself.

From AudioFile
This is the smoothest and most developed of Beattie's audios, which are all focused on recovering from addiction, having healthy connections with others, and living one's inner life to its fullest. Her audios, all narrated in a slow and thoughtful voice, are all full of compassion and hope. But this one is especially touching, as if the author has found even more personal security and moral confidence than she has expressed in her previous audios. She floats above herself and seems to have no personal agenda as she tells stories that are touching and rich with visual imagery. These are punctuated by activities and meditations very appropriate for the themes. A marvelous listening and growing experience. AWSOME PART 2. gET BOTH BOOKS
By Tammy ORourke
Its more of how get control over yourself after addictive behaviors start happening.. I recommend both her books of Letting GO. you will also learn about codependency, This book talks about codependency straight up truth. I suffered from that for many years. Someone years ago gave me a book on it. I was in my early 20_s a little bit neive, was eager too understand exactly that book I was reading was all about me. From that point in my life I began healing and getting stronger in the way I viewed my relationship...the first book letting go by Melody Beattie was about 17years ago. I have too say I knew what I had too do, make a plan too get out of that DESTRUCTIVE relationship. Honest the more I studied, the more courage I got.. Today I"m in a great relationship, no control. I"m happy too say we are both equal. I was mesmerized when I found her new book More Language Of Letting GO. She changed my life too where I felt Whole, worthy, also all along it was not my fault.

Anyyone can gain good insight from any of Melody Beattie's words
By Marian M
Great book that you can use daily year after year. It has a message for each day of the year and you can pick it up anytime. Sometimes they are a little too sappy or religious for me, but not too much that I don't still use it. I just might skip this day and read another days message. These are great daily thoughts to give you something to consider as you move throughout your day. (I think all of Melody Bettie's books are AWESOME for co-dependence issues whether it is you or someone you love). They by far helped me more than any other books on the subject.) P.S. You do not have to be co-dependent or never have been in relationships with alcoholics or abusers for these messages to impact your positivity for the day. Everyone can get something from it.

Daily Meditations
By Amazon Customer
I purchased this book as a gift for someone battling alcoholism.They reported back to me that they use the book daily and began to find it helpful as a compliment to educational groups they have attended. I have a social work background & thru my research discovered that Melanie Beattie writes a lot of books related to addiction and family dynamics and many people who have issues with alcoholism would find them helpful.

Wonderful Read!
By Josh's Angel
I first read this story on Fanfiction.net before the author changed things to really make it her own unique work. From the very first chapter I was enthralled and I devoured the story. She brings the characters to life and makes you feel their emotions. You will cry for their pain, laugh with their joy, and seethe with their anger. It is a truly wonderful read and one I will be buying myself to have it to read over and over again!

Finally A Happy Ending
By Sienna
I had watched the Hellboy movies and after learning of Nuadha, his plight struck me deeply in my heart. His quest was understandable and i wished that he and his people had a better ending. I was so happy to find this book, as it fulfills all that i was searching for. It's fun and light hearted, well -written, and even silly. Still, it filled the hole of desire for a better fate for the fey.

I would recommend this book to any person who wanted a different ending to Hellboy 2.

This is her first book?! You're kidding!
By Rhibran
I cannot believe that this book is the first book this author has ever published. I call bullcrap. I want to see the other stories that this author has penned because I couldn't put this one down. The characters are visceral. You taste the salt in their tears. You can see the light in their eyes when they laugh. You can feel the heat in yourself when they love.These characters will become your friends. You'll try to invite them your next party, you'll like them so much.

The author's storytelling weaves in and out and back and forth. You never know the next turn. You never know the next twist. Some twists warm your heart to a place you didn't know existed within you. Some turns are like a knife being twisted in your heart. At one point, my heart hurt so badly, I cried and almost called 911. No one's heart hurts that much without having an actual cardiac event.

There are a couple of issues with the book, most are formatting errors that happened when uploading to Kindle form, and I know the author is working to fix them. The other problem is some grammatical errors or typos that are common with self published books. Sans copy editor, mistakes get made as it is easy for authors miss things. These errors are minimal, and again, I know the author is making copy corrections. This in no way detracts from the story nor does it affect the ease of the read.

I have recommended this book to everyone I know. It is adult/fantasy/romance. So be prepared for a really good ride.
