There are two things I can say unequivocally about what I have read. One, Marty Gallagher is the best writer in the world of physical fitness and strength, bar none, and two, Gallagher s newest book The Purposeful Primitive is the best manuscript ever produced in this field.

What an amazing book.It just shows you what is possible with regards to getting stronger.Such an inspiration.Even shows how ordinary very weak de-conditioned people got strong very quickly whilst only walking and using a barbell twice a week.

Fantastic resource for beginner or long time Iron devotee

A book on the crossroads of bodybuilding, power-lifting, and fat loss, by an accomplished lifter, coach and writer with over forty years of experience in the game.

Mixed feelings about this book. Short form: I highly recommend it to a range of audiences, despite my reservations. I enjoyed reading it, and will re-read it several times, looking for the bits I can make use of.

Marty coached or met everyone who was anyone in the world of Power lifting in the 80s and 90s, and he fills the book with anecdotes that give a real feel for the characters that made a half-underground sport what it was. He also uses these anecdotes to great effect when discussing training styles and nutritional strategies, building his recommendations for various phases of body recomposition around the greats he trained with or coached. His writing is engaging, and his genuine love of the sport shines through. The tales of strength he shares are inspiring, and he has a knack for presenting even the roughest of his subjects with their humanity intact.

The training and diet information are comprehensive. Marty is a big believer in old school training splits and volume, and he has plenty of experience to back up his position. It's an approach to training that will feel pretty revolutionary to a machine trainer or someone caught up in the absurd, unproductive isolation training so many unqualified trainers end up foisting on their clients.

On the downside, this is mostly a book for beginners and intermediate trainees. I didn't see his weight training recommendations as all that relevant to my own current needs; my program is already spartan by Marty's standards, and I expect a fair number of more experienced lifters will feel the same way. His cardio and diet recommendations were similarly solid, but not likely to change the way I train or eat (not because they're bad; just because it's another case of "I already do that"). Marty also doesn't make much of a training distinction between Body Building, Power Lifting, Strong Man Competition, Olympic Lifting, Martial Arts, or other strength sports. To a more advanced lifter who knows where he wants to fit in the strength game, that cuts into the book's utility.

The place where the book falls down most is in its silence on the subject of steroids. It's a tough subject to honestly discuss. Talking about it opens you up to attack from the For The Children crowd and scares the heck out of a certain percentage of law abiding citizens (i.e. the vast majority of the market). Athletes don't want their reputations tarnished by the public admission that they were using, and supplement manufacturers (a prime job for ex-champions) hate admitting that their spokes-user did not gain twenty inch biceps at three percent body-fat solely through the use of their products.

So, Marty doesn't talk about steroids and training at all. This isn't just a problem because we miss out on part of the story of power lifting and bodybuilding in the day. Ultimately, the training you believe in and recommend is built around what you've seen work. The training that works for a twenty year old serious steroid user is not necessarily relevant to any natural trainee, let alone the thirty-and-over crowd Marty seems to be speaking to. I can see how much experience he's bringing to the recommendations in this book, and I absolutely respect his impeccable strength-cred. But I'm left wondering: Are these volume recommendations really the best choices for a non-user?

In the end, I'd say that this book is still of great value and well worth purchasing, despite its flaws. If you're interested in a slice of Iron History, or a beginner looking for a guide to body transformation, go get it.

Nice Collection of Essays by American Authors

The Modern American Novel: Book of Essays by Forest Balderson is a nice collection of essays on various books that the high school and/or college student will have to read at one time or another. The essays included are of course by American novelists. The essasy are:

1. The Sound and The Fury by William Faulkner
2. The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway
3. Sister Carrier by Theodore Dreiser
4. Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton
5. Look Homeward, Angel by Thomas Wolfe
6. Miss Lonelyhearts by Nathanael West
7. Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald
8. The Big Money by John Dos Passos

Balderson does a good job of presenting the various themes and motifs present in these novels and touches on the subject of the various author's strengths and weaknesses as novelists. Balderson also touches on all major characters and what leads these characters in the story. He also touches on important quotations. This is a refreshing and interesting take on the standard college essay. What sets Balderson's work apart for me is the ability to weave an understanding of the story with the idea of what the author was trying to accomplish.

This collection isn't meant to replace Sparknotes, but if you're a student looking to go beyond Sparknotes in the area of character development and get in depth into the themes, motifs, and symbols of these novels then this is a collection for you. These essays are not meant for you to copy verbatim, which will get you expelled for plagiarism (trust me teachers will find out), instead these are meant to lead you in a new direction of thinking about these novels. These go beyond the overview of the story and give a personal insight into the reasoning behind these novels. As someone who reads the novel first, then goes to Sparknotes to see what I missed, I found these essays an excellent addition to my arsenal. The way I used these essays were to further assist me in constructing my own ideas for my essay.

Data Mining book you should read first

Be careful, the first edition is MUCH older. Make sure you get the current 2004 edition.

There are most recent books, but this one is still worth reading first. This is especially true is you are an analyst. Managers of analysts might enjoy Super Crunchers: Why Thinking-by-Numbers Is the New Way to Be Smart or Competing on Analytics: The New Science of Winning, but analysts will need much more detail.

This the best single volume on Data Mining you can buy. As one who mostly teaches methodologies, I like that all the major topics are here: neural nets, market basket, cluster, and trees. But there are also techniques that SPSS and Clementine (the software packages I use) can not do like "link analysis". Also, unlike Larose Discovering Knowledge in Data: An Introduction to Data Mining, the data preparation reads like preparing data for data mining, not a carbon copy of preparing data for statistics. Regarding this issue see the excellent Data Preparation for Data Mining (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Data Management Systems). I have pretty much concluded that a data mining book that does not make clear that data mining and OLAP are not the same is not a great book. This book has an extended section on just that. It is highly readable and comprehensive.

Everyone Should Do This

Data mining is such a simple thing that you wonder why more companies don't do a better job of mining their own data sitting on their own hard disks.

If a customer buys the first in a series of mystery novels, who better to send a note telling him that the second book is now available. That's the essence of data mining. This would allow you to get a much higher return on your mailing, saving money and increasing return on your marketing.

This is one of those books that you need to read every few months. Each time you go through it you will find some idea that will enable you to get more out of your data. It isn't a book heavy on programming, but on the concepts that have worked for others.

Highly recommended.

A must-have book for your technical library

Anyone interested in automating and improving decisions should have this book. It is one of the classic works on data mining and well worth the read.

I really liked the book both because it is well written and because, although it drilled into a fair amount of detail about some of the techniques, it started each new section off at a high level. This allows someone without a statistical background, such as me, to read as far as I can in each section and then skip ahead to the next technique. This is a nice change from books that simply get more and more detailed as page follows page, preventing you from gaining an overview of the subject.

The book introduces data mining and a methodology for applying it, talks about some of the applications in "Marketing, Sales, and Customer Relationship Management" (as the subtitle puts it), walks through some statistical techniques and then spends the bulk of the book on various data mining techniques. It wraps up with a nice summary of how data mining plays with other technologies and with some practical advice on getting started.

One of the best summaries of where data mining fits is given early in the book where an enterprise is encouraged to:

- Notice what its customers are doing

- Remember what it and its customers have done over time

- Learn from what it has remembered

- Act on what if has learned to make customers more profitable

The authors point out that Data Mining is focused on the "Learn" stage or, as they put it data mining suggests but businesses decide.

The methodology section, and the subsequent notes that relate to applying these techniques in real life, talked about the feedback loops between steps in data mining - there is not a linear "waterfall" sequence of steps but constant iteration and learning. They also emphasized the importance of finding the right business problem at the beginning - start as someone once said, with the end in mind. This was reiterated when they quote Voltaire who said "Le mieux est l'ennemi du bien" ("The best is the enemy of good"). In other words, don't get hung up on trying to find the perfect algorithm, perfect answer. Instead build something that is good, that works, and learn and improve over time.

The authors made a big point out of the value of data mining for "mass intimacy", where you want to treat customers differently and there is a business reason to do so but where customers are too numerous to be assigned to staff. One of the issues they pointed out was that staff must be trained in customer interaction skills while also using all the data you have. The value of data mining in building a customer-centric organization cannot be overestimated.

Disappointing quality of answers.

Lewis's other book, Decode and Conquer, is great and an invaluable resource when preparing for product management interviews. However, reading this book, I was shocked by the difference in the quality of answers here compared to those in Decode and Conquer. Many of the answers in this book seem out of line and even outdated, despite the recent publishing date. For instance, in the answer to "How would you improve Dropbox?", part of the answer details how Dropbox is unable to revert to previous versions of files, even though that's been a feature of Dropbox since the first demo video made at the inception of the company in 2007.

Altogether, $40 is too steep a price to pay for the book. A handful of questions out of the 160 are helpful, but the book overall lends the impression that the writing process involved taking a quick glance at each problem, putting down whatever came to mind first, and moving on.

Lewis Lin has an immense wealth of knowledge about the PM interview process and has overall been extremely helpful -- his other books and answers on Quora etc. are all very thoughtful and detailed. This book is disappointing and doesn't match up to the standard of his other works.

The quality of the answers in this book are extremely poor. I found that this books at times can actually be counterproductive in preparing for PM interviews, as many answers are extremely unstructured and given without rationale - the complete opposite of what should be done to succeed in product management interviews. While I have enjoyed reading Lewis Lin's other books, I will most definitely not be recommending this one to anybody and it is disappointing to see the significant drop in quality compared to some of his other works.

Interesting and well explained

Good clear and concise explanations on elastic theory and its application to Geotechnics. Includes worked examples that help illustrate the process of application to real world problems. I found that this was a good addition as often you're presented with analytical solutions to various geotechnical problems, without any explanation of the genesis.

Nice Entry-Level Text for this Subject

This is a great introductory text for the subject of elasticity applied to geomaterials. Don't take intorductory to mean simple - the reader should be familiar with fundamental concepts of mechanics, material behavior, hydraulics, and soil mechanics. The book would make a nice text (of a couple) for a graduate level course in applied geomechanics. Couple this text with the authors' "Plasticity..." text, and you have a great primer on the subject.
