About the Author
Highly respected social work educators, Dean H. Hepworth and Jo Ann Larsen originally defined how direct practice should be taught.
Ronald Rooney is a Professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Minnesota. A practitioner in child welfare, community mental health, and school social work, Dr. Rooney is also the author of STRATEGIES FOR WORK WITH INVOLUNTARY CLIENTS. He was the 2004 winner of the Academic Leadership Award of the College of Human Ecology, University of Minnesota.
Glenda Dewberry Rooney is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Social Work at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She taught undergraduate and graduate courses in direct practice, ethics, and research as well as courses in organizations and administration. Her practice experience includes child welfare, mental health, and work with families and children. In addition to her practice experience, she has been involved in community-based research and has worked with agencies concerned with children, youth, and families as a trainer and as a clinical, program, and management consultant. Active in retirement, Dr. Rooney continues to be an advocate for child welfare policies and practices that strengthen and support families. She served as a state-wide leader involved in developing community partnerships for the public education during the enrollment periods of the Affordable Care Act.
Kim Strom-Gottfried is a Professor at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Social Work, where she teaches in the areas of direct practice, communities and organizations, and human resource management. Dr. Strom-Gottfried's scholarly interests involve ethics, managed care, and social work education. She provides training and consultation and research related to private practice, ethics, and managed care.

Way too expensive and no customer support

This publisher withholds material for which they expect more money. You have to spend an additional $40 to have access to videos and other study guides, which are repeatedly mentioned in the main text, which, by the way, already costs $150. Major rip off, would you not agree?

Average book. VERY dry.

First and foremost, this book is very expensive (as most college books are). They're fairly new, so it's hard to find any of these that are used and cheaper. This book is so dry, and it's very hard to get through the chapters. Prepare yourself, social work majors. I will say that the examples of social work/client dialogue are very helpful, and that's just about all the help I got from this book. My professor was a lot better at explaining things than the book was. Overall, not the best practicum book I've ever had. Also not the worst.

Please don't subject your students to this book!

I read this book as part of a Master's Social Work class. My classmates and I all complained regularly about this book. It is poorly written - the verbiage is awkward and murky - many concepts could have been more effectively explained with far fewer words. The authors seemed to think that the bigger the word, the more effective the communication. After a while, the reader's mind just shuts down from working too hard trying to figure out exactly what the Authors are saying.
Also, there were very few pages that didn't have at least one grammatical error. Proper grammar should be textbook 101 in my opinion. Another review stated the textbook was dry - which is giving it far too much credit. I have never fallen asleep so often while reading a textbook. My social work research book was far more interesting a read than this book. If you're looking for a good book on Social Work Practice... keep looking.
